dells68 7,498 #1 Posted September 13, 2020 The B17, Sentimental Journey, made a stop not too far away this weekend. It’s one of 5 in the world left flying. It was built for and used during World War II. It later saw duty as a fire fighting plane before undergoing an 18 year restoration to its former glory. We were able to tour it yesterday. If it ever stops near you, go check it out!! The tour was only $20 for a family, but you could go for a ride if you could cough up $425 per seat or $850 for a nose seat! Too rich for my blood!! 1 1 1
Ed Kennell 38,022 #2 Posted September 13, 2020 Mr. George Harry White worked for me for 30+ years as a mechanical assembler. George was a WWII tail gunner in a B17. He got a free ride when the B17 was in York, Pa. His favorite comment.... I flew backwards farther than most people fly forward. Thanks for sharing this Dell.

The gunners took the worst of it. Love the old WWII stuff. They had a big airshow at the AFB near Buffalo the year after 911. Solem and exciting at the same time. One thing I noticed was the abundance of grease fittings on everything. Grease dripping eerywhere.

WHNJ701 4,165 #5 Posted September 13, 2020 Awesome to see it is still flying around, that b17 had neat history, it was a fire bomber in california up until the 70s when the CAF purchased it and restored it. Any opportunity I get to see these planes I go and take my kids, especially miss the collings foundation, hopefully they will get a permission to fly again. WW2 weekend in reading PA is a must if your into these planes
rjg854 11,350 #6 Posted September 13, 2020 My dad was a radio man on B17s for the first part of WWII, until he was stationed in England for the remainder of the war. That's about all I know, he wouldn't talk about his time in service.
