Tractorhead 9,065 #201 Posted October 6, 2020 Column ( 4-th Vote) Perfectly with a bearing on top or maybe a bushing to damp rattling noise of Steering wheel and smoothen steering.
wallfish 17,114 #202 Posted October 6, 2020 IMO The column makes sense for support but it doesn't look old sckool. There's the dilemma. A bearing under the tower and bare shaft is my vote. 2

It's one of the ways i use to prevent myself from ending up in a heap on the floor sadly resembling a tangled shadow of my former self. 1

Stormin 9,981 #221 Posted October 6, 2020 Back to the column. I was going to say with a tube to beef it out a bit. But after a think about what wallfish said, and a look or two. I'm for the vintage look.
ebinmaine 68,889 #222 Posted October 6, 2020 I originally voted for having just the column alone with no tube. At that point I did not consider support or bearings. I just like the look of the thinner column better. Knowing that you have bearings in the lower column is fantastic. I did have a couple questions. ... You've mentioned that this particular build is supposed to be for your lovely wife. Is she in the habit of using the steering wheel as her balance and support mechanism such as I did in the video? That is what I do every single time I get on and off of my tractor. If she is in such a habit, do you have a flange somewhere to prevent the column from flying up at her? As roaringly hilarious as that would be I'm not sure she's the best victim for said hilarious mechanical failure. The other question I had was, what does she think ... or does it not matter to her one way or the other...
Oldskool 6,658 #223 Posted October 6, 2020 @ebinmaine To answer your first question. I'm not sure how she would get on or off, with or without the wheel. I will have to have her try. Answer #2. Yes I have a bolt in the e d of the column to keep it in place. Answer #3 I asked her an her response was "you do as you want to do".
