WHNJ701 4,165 #1 Posted September 11, 2020 Not sure if this is the original carb for a the 551 h55d engine? My book has it listed as Tecumseh with float. If I need rebuild kit down the road so I know what to order

formariz 11,994 #7 Posted September 12, 2020 (edited) @jabelmanThe original and correct carb for that model is the Walbro LMG157. The important thing about it, is that it is one of the very few carburetors that has the adjustments on the left side looking at it from the top. The 551 is probably the hardest tractor to work on since it is very tight with all it has under the hood and hood it self does not open. Carburetors with the adjustment on the opposite side like most of them make it virtually impossible to adjust carburetor while tractor is running. Exhaust pipe and other things are on the way. Its extremely frustrating. You can see that on one of your photos. I suggest that if you can try to find a carburetor with the adjustments on that side. The correct one is like finding a hen's tooth but a couple of the ones used on Clinton engines have adjustments on that side. I have two of those tractors and luckily have the original carburetor. Another thing to keep in mind is to make sure that there are no leaks from it since any fuel coming from it winds directly on top of battery. WHNJ701 4,165 #8 Posted September 12, 2020 (edited) Yes it's a hard to work one, uncomfortable to ride, but it's a cool one in the collection of misfits,. I was wondering about the carb adjustment on the exhaust side. This carb looks identical too to the one on the commando with the tech snowblower engine. I won't be putting the electronics or battery in it. So far it starts easily with the pull start. Seems to be running fine, ran it for about 1/2 hour yesterday with some marvel which seemed to help. It's very interesting comparing this to the 701, same year far better tractor! Edited September 12, 2020 by jabelman
formariz 11,994 #9 Posted September 12, 2020 When you have a few of them from earliest to latest one is able to appreciate their evolution and how much better they became to work on and use. The old ones are cool lookers but not the greatest to work on and with.
Tractorhead 9,093 #10 Posted September 12, 2020 @formariz thanks for clear up the carb versions. i thought it was the original Carb on it, because of the Pictures it seemed exact the same i have on my 6HP. Didn‘t have any contact before with a 5HP Tecky horizontal Engine. i see the side steering carbs here just on Vertical Engines. @jabelman i cleaned my carb one time, just to prevent bowl get‘s clogged while using. i check on mine the Setting, they be closely to basic setup. I like to suggest you, put urgently an inlinefilter into fuelsystem. on mine alleady one was in and i just exchanged it with a new one. On metal Fueltanks they bit older is mostly bit of rust inside, that can clog quickly the mainnozzle. For whatever Carb you decide finally, with that minimum of that rust in the bowl it runs like a sack of nuts. no clean idle will happen and it appears you had a little ignition troubles or point‘s ain‘t correct. I had this issues on several older Briggs and Tecky Engines. My Tecky also Fires right up after first pull and run’s with it’s new Filter fantastic. In idle it run’s little too rich, i double checked that with an external oxygen sensor, but in Full throttle it get’s close to a perfect match of a stoechiometric value form 1:13,8 instead 1:14 so i decide to leave it in that Setup. When the intake butterfly‘s are not worn on it’s bearings i would keep it. Just my 2 cents
WHNJ701 4,165 #11 Posted September 12, 2020 @Tractorhead yes it will have the inline filter and fuel shut off. It's running good now with carb as is, and the cleaned points ex, condenser. As the saying goes ain't broke don't fix it.
305 380 #12 Posted September 13, 2020 jabelman , if you want a carb kit for you existing carburetor i suggest Primeline 7-02006 for me i would just buy one of those cheap Chinese carburetors on that big online auction site searching the carb numbers Tractorhead gave. $10-$12 shipping included . i have had VERY good luck with them , if anyone has doubts you can stop over to my place and we will fire up all three of my Wheelhorses with Chinese carbs
305 380 #13 Posted September 13, 2020 and yes , with the idle speed screw and slow speed mixture screw pointing to the exhaust it can be irritating to work with , but once you set them you don't really have to touch them for years
