JohnD 145 #1 Posted September 11, 2020 I recently acquired a C-175. When I pull up and back on the transmission clutch lever to disengage the transmission, I have to hold it up against the spring. Is there supposed to be a latch? Is this operator error? The owner's manual (that the PO still had!) states to "push the lever down" to engage the transmission, if I let go of the handle the transmission reengages. I don't see this mechanism in any of the part photos. Can someone point me to the right info? The owner's manual states that for temperatures from 0F to 30F to disengage the transmission and run the engine full throttle for 2 minutes, and then engage the transmission and let it run in neutral for another 5 minutes (7 minutes total). Why not just keep it engaged and warm everything up for 5 minutes?
wallfish 17,079 #2 Posted September 11, 2020 Take off the belt guard and you will see the mechanism. Yes, it's supposed to lock in the up position. Looking at it will probably indicate why it isn't staying up Starting the engine under load in freezing temps is hard on an engine and the reason why the manual states that
JohnD 145 #3 Posted September 11, 2020 Ah, so it is a starter issue, not a transmission issue. That makes a lot more sense. I should have a chance to pull the belt guard this weekend. Thanks.
JoeM 7,874 #4 Posted September 11, 2020 John that lever should cam over and stay in position. Pulling up and back makes it stay in place. If not the lever may have some wear in the slot and needs replaced.
JohnD 145 #5 Posted September 12, 2020 I found the shifter mechanism in https://www.partstree.com/models/01-17ke03-c-175-toro-garden-tractor-1983/clutch-brake-and-speed-control-linkage-2/. I don't see an obvious latching mechanism. Does anyone know which part number engages the latch? Here's a quick video with the belt guard removed that shows the clutch lever operation. What am I missing?
JohnD 145 #6 Posted September 13, 2020 (edited) Ah, I found it. the 49 lever is supposed to pivot on the 35 lever to latch. My 35 was hanging loose because the 42 cotter pin is missing. Before After Edited September 13, 2020 by JohnD
