AMC RULES 37,134 #3 Posted September 11, 2020 You do have a belt cover in place on that machine?
8ntruck 7,082 #4 Posted September 11, 2020 Welcome to the forum. Bunch of good folks here. Somebody will have the answer. I am thinking along the same lines as AMC Rules. There are belt guides inside of the drive belt guard that hold the belt off of the drive pulley when the clutch is pushed. If those belt guides are broken or out of adjustment, or if the belt guard is not in place, the drive belt will still contact the drive pulley when the clutch is depressed. Good luck. wallfish 17,079 #6 Posted September 11, 2020 Belt should be 1/2 w x 29" Yes the belt guard should be installed because that's what guides the belt loop around the engine pulley. The belt must slack off the engine pulley groove so it doesn't spin. Even with a belt guard they can be a little finicky to get adjusted right. If you don't have a belt guard, little belt guides can easily be made with 1/4" rod to guide the belt
Kenjets 19 #7 Posted September 11, 2020 I didn't have the belt guide on when testing it. I will try that . Thanks
953 nut 55,769 #8 Posted September 11, 2020 Here is a copy of the manual for the RJ. Be sure the belt you are using is a fabric wrapped belt. Some automotive belts are rubber edged belts and grab hard.

I saw @wallfish John saying something to him about these wire guides yesterday. A visual is often helpful.
