Bill D 1,907 #1 Posted September 9, 2020 (edited) Is anyone using Lucas 10W-30 Hot Rod and Racing Oil in their engines? It has 2100 PPM of zinc in it as well as additives to prevent corrosion in engines that sit unused for long periods of time. Thoughts? JoeM 7,871 #2 Posted September 9, 2020 I don't use Lucas but I do use Mobile. Same thoughts with no issues. Racing oil is probably a better choice than additives. I managed heavy industrial maintenance for over thirty years and found oil manufactures have lots of products designed and engineered to match the need. I always looked at additives as if you take vitamins cause your diet is poor. I am not brand loyal and most major manufactures have some kind of racing or high performance fluids. This is just the info sheet from Mobil. mobil-1-racing-product-guide.pdf

ebinmaine 67,274 #8 Posted September 9, 2020 We'll be switching over to Kinetix oil. Locally available. Price competitive. I can get 10W30 and straight 30. Meets or exceeds API SJ according to the bottle. SJ: Phosphorus 1301, Zinc 1280.
71_Bronco 1,072 #9 Posted September 9, 2020 Never thought to use it in my tractor, but I use the high zinc in my Ford Pinto....

Mike e. 26 #14 Posted September 10, 2020 Hmm I like the idea of using racing oils seeing where the engines are under a lot of heavy usage and strain so it's better protection but I have an first gen kt 17 original on a 81 C-175 it's got some wear and tear on it and I've used restore oil additive in other well broken it engines both auto and small engines I've used it since it very first came out and it works very well in just about everything I've put it in it increases co.pression and it actually can bring tired engines back to life especially the older engines speaking of which I have to rewire and find a coil and starter for my C-175 so where can I find a good wiring diagram for my first gen Kohler kt17

305 380 #16 Posted September 10, 2020 i have three older cars that have flat tappet camshafts , the use of zinc is necessary in them. i use conventional Valvoline with Rislone #4405 supplement. available at any auto parts store. i also add some to my Wheelhorses and my 1966 Honda 4
Greentored 3,201 #17 Posted September 11, 2020 (edited) You fellas notice this?- Regardless of what oils and/or additives we discuss, the one common denominator is ZDDP/ZINC, and you are absolutely, 100% correct! A lifetime hotrod hobby turned career 13 years ago, believe me- if you run newer, off the shelf oil in an older, flat tappet engine, its not 'if' you'll eat a cam, its 'when'. That is a fact! We do a lot of em. I am one of the few shops who will still install/replace/build with a flat tappet cam (roller conversions aren't in everyones budget) and they live a long and happy life. Keep the idle up, and run a high ZDDP oil or additive, thats all there is to it. Not sure how detrimental it is to our flat tappet Horses running a lot less spring pressure than an automobile, but willing to bet over time, the same thing would happen. "Long live the flat tappet cam!" ........with the right oil. If you are interested in enough good reading to make your head explode- check out 'bobistheoilguy' website. peter lena 8,580 #18 Posted September 11, 2020 305, agree with the rislone zinc zddp additive, best price is on amazon prime , i also recently contacted rislone about adding a side measurement scale to the bottle for smaller engine amounts . adding this to rotella 30 wt , is the magic smooth , effortless running that you have to experience, pete
Bill D 1,907 #19 Posted September 12, 2020 Is Rotella 30wt synthetic? I was hoping to avoid additives by using the Lucas products. I was looking at their 10W-30 for one tractor I use just for leaf pickup. They also have a 30W for lawn equipment. I may try that for my primary mower. Thanks for all the advise. Lagersolut 648 #20 Posted September 12, 2020 Just read through the Owners manual on my K341, does not recommend multi grade oil over 32 degrees. The newer classic GT with the Kohler CH15 gets 10w-30 . Just picked up on the reviews for the Rislone I'll be adding 2 oz of that on top of the Rotella straight 30 diesel oil for the 3 K series here .
