WHX??

This time it's a transmission! This one is what I believe to be a 5007 that was attached to a 701 that Dan had. He knew I didn't have enough projects so he sandbagged me with this! Least @Achto trying to keep me out of the tavern! :D

The big mystery was this plate on the backside of the brake shaft/mushroom gear.

Savable or not?!??!?

Why not I saved this one? She's a bit noisy but moves the tractor!

Hold your horses Madge I'm gettin there!

The deal breaker behind patch No. 1

Mushroom capped bearing was gone and this was in it's place.

20200907_173834.jpg

The worse part is the bearing bore is egg shaped and chewed up. To solve this the mystery mechanic tried to shim or fill in the slop in the bore to hold the bushing into place with some kind of material. Interesting I found many other places in the steering gear on this tractor where said PO used brass sheets stuffed in wallowed out holes so he must of fairly adept at this type of repair. Gotta give the PO credit for trying I guess even though it was a ill thought out repair!

Sadly the bore  is beyond repair now and the short side case is now a boat anchor.

Some kind of bushing on the mushroom gear adds insult to injury!

The good news is I have another three speed that I might be able to use parts from. Not much better shape than this one but won't be for lack of trying. Now the crappy work begins..... cleaning up this mess :chores-mop:and see what other parts are usable.

20200907_174327.jpg

The donor tranny. A tad better but I must be a glutton for punishment!

20200705_130224.jpg

Not sure what model this is but guessing from a early to mid sixties. Will have to check some casting marks and see what @stevasaurus

says. Just remembered this came off a 1055 so should be a 5049?? What say ye Dino?

Yeah I haven't seen any really nasty ones yet. I've taken apart maybe six or eight transmissions I guess? Some of them had some rust on the top half where the airspace would be but all of them have been really really mucky but usable once cleaned up.

This was a different one too. The shifter busted off at the ball. Getting the stub out was a chore here but luckily the dog point was already out/missing..

I may make Dan repair & resto this just for paybacks!

I'm thinking that second c-160 I've got with a techie engine is probably going to be pretty rugged. Going to be quite a while before I get into that one though.

I’ve never used vinegar, the smell is unbearable.  For my e-tank, I use Arm and Hammer WASHING Soda with the water out of my hose.

Might be surprised .... couple yrs after Katrina, I bought a nice? - at one time... South Bend lathe that had been completely submerged in that toxic soup in New Awlins. Had a pretty extensive gear box and that was where the damage was (looked a lot like your mess), rest of lathe was pretty good (why I gambled on it) On tear down and clean up - sand blasting - I had one gear that was unuseable. Course EVERY bearing was shot, but that was an easy fix. Between my buddy and I we had the gear cutting tools and made that one gear --- Ive now been using the lathe some 5-6 yrs and its a nice one, a bit noisier than when new but certainly not bad.

Some scraping, a 4" grinder with a wire wheel, then electrolysis (WITH THE WASHING SODA), the sand blast with plastic pellets and it will be like brand new.

The 1st trans is probably a #5007.  With the other one being a #5049...do me a favor and put up some good pictures of the shift rails.  They look different to me in the picture you have here.  I believe this is going to be where the difference is between this and the 5053.  :occasion-xmas:

OY, thats an evil lookin one!  Could that case half be bored and a larger OD bushing pressed in, or arent these cases too hard to come by?

You guys ever try citric acid for de-rusting? Cheap, goes a long way, works incredible, and if you dip your fingertip in and try it, it tastes like a sour patch kid lol. (try this BEFORE dipping parts, not after:lol:)

Naww boring the case would get to be too pricey as I don't have a machine shop in my back pocket. What a regular shop would charge just for setup would be crazy $$. Then getting it back in the right spot. They are not too hard to come by you know where to look.

More info on the citric acid tho Green where do you get the stuff I'd try anything once... twice I like it! :)

Last one I pretty much did what Dino said on a wire wheel on the grinder. Messy but worked. I may try sand blasting this time too.... can't make them any worse.  The problem with trying to save them in any fashion is two much metal gone off the gears. You lose the tolerances so you are gonna have a noisy beast but that's ok as you're not using them for workers other than light tub duty, putting around the 'hood. No high stakes pulling or flying them at 33,000 feet!

This one was introduced to me by the Coleman lantern crowd for cleaning up 50-100 year old lanterns.  Its available on the jungle site and pretty cheap considering how far it goes. Powdered form, 1 cup per gallon is plenty. Zero smell, absolutely safe around food/drinks/skin/environment, and if you can heat it up, it works incredible and pretty quick! Yes, if you have an invisible cut on your hands, you'll find it, just like vinegar. If you leave a small metal part in there and forget about it, it WILL be gone if enough time passes. Were pretty safe with tractor parts when it comes to nickel, chrome, brass which old lanterns contain a bunch of- if left too long, it WILL strip nickel and chrome, and it will turn brass pink due to leeching the copper out, which polishes out but am told this starts a reaction that will eventually ruin the brass part over the next couple decades. Vinegar will do the same on all accounts.

I LIKE the smell of vinegar, but once metal parts have been soaked in it, the smell is completely different (bad/metallic/chemical), it gets into your hands, dries them out, turns them black, and wont wash out. You wont be grabbin the ol lady for a couple days thats for sure:lol:

Im intrigued by the washing soda! Never heard of this one. Itll strip rust?

As used in an E tank. Like I said I have never done it but many guys here have. Much conversation here about doing it and a ton of info on :text-google: and You Tube.
