Stepney 2,325 #1 Posted August 31, 2020 Picked this old tank up the other night.. just had gone on lunch at work, and checked Marketplace on the phone.. 3 buildings up the street, this little Cub was posted.. Fellow had owned it and a slightly newer model for many years, they had been sitting better than 20+ and had not been touched. He was moving and they had to go.. price was very reasonable. Grabbed this '65 102, the deck, and the plow. Original weights too. And a bunch of paperwork.. Did not touch the carb, points, etc.. simply added gas and jumped it.. fired right off. No reason in even touching any of it.. runs better than some of my other engines which have a LOT more time in them All I had to do was free up the drive clutch. Off we go.. generator charges and the ancient battery somehow will take a charge still. Torn between just moving it along, or keeping it and giving it a makeover.. dont mind the old paint on the hood, but all the yellow has been poorly resprayed and now makes a gaudy 2-tone look. Original Ohio Rubber seat somehow survived quite well. Quite a strange experience to sit in.. just doesnt feel 'normal'. But yeah, here she be! 6 7
WHX?? 48,779 #2 Posted August 31, 2020 (edited) Nice save ! From here the patina is looking sweet but not as sweet as those wheel weights! Poorly sprayed is character in my book. I think Dan @Achto has got that same seat on his diesel only in the very rare black Dan??? I think it's ungly but dang nice on the butt under a sprung support . WVHillbilly520H 10,373 #4 Posted September 1, 2020 Yep, I have a 126 (3rd lowest production model) still bouncing the idea of keeping and restoring or passing along the decision never gets any easier no matter the brand... 5
WHNJ701 4,165 #5 Posted September 1, 2020 (edited) Great looking cub, love the patina. I know some very serious cub collectors and the market really shifted to all original untouched paint, they are paying big money for some of these original machines and attachments Edited September 1, 2020 by jabelman
Achto 27,504 #6 Posted September 1, 2020 Sweet tractor!! I might have a hard time parting with it if I be you. 2 hours ago, WHX24 said: I think Dan @Achto has got that same seat on his diesel only in the very rare black Dan??? Don't know where it came from but I sure like it. Comfort ain't always pretty Jim. 2
D_Mac 8,593 #7 Posted September 1, 2020 I know exactly how you feel. I now have an appreciation for these older Cubs. Built like a Sherman Tank. Mine was also painted some time ago and had the two tone yellow effect. I decided to touch it up. Mine also came with a lot of original paper work. I got the snow blower, not a plow. I too am undecided as to " keep it or move it along" . These older Cubs are no joke.
squonk 41,023 #8 Posted September 1, 2020 (edited) Had a Cub 100 to mow with for a couple of years before I got my 90 210-H. Wish I never got rid of my Cub Original. Pretty comfy ride! Edited September 1, 2020 by squonk

T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,496 #10 Posted September 1, 2020 To the OP, the seat is original and are getting harder to find. The headlight, though, isn't original.

Alex175 784 #15 Posted September 1, 2020 I've got a Cub Cadet 70 in pieces that I took apart years ago, had a customer walk into the NAPA store I was working in at the time and asked if I knew of anybody who would want a free tractor...needless to say I got his number and told him I would stop by after I got out of work. Took it apart years ago, found the right motor for it as it had an 8hp in it when I got i got it. One of these day's I'll get the ambition to finally sand and paint all the parts. Then comes the matter of trying to put it back together after a decade in pieces...
Mike'sHorseBarn 2,984 #16 Posted September 1, 2020 I have 3 cubs and am currently restoring a 102 that belonged to my wife's grandfather. They sure are built like a tank and have lots of power being direct drive, but they are a pain to work on. IH loved to put things together with roll pins and 60 years later those roll pins don't like to come out lol

If you look at the photo of mine you can see holes in the hood where the PO had mounted a pair of head lights. If I decide to keep it I am going to swap out the front plate for a correct head light set. There is one for sale local for 70 bucks.

I haven't taken a lot of exciting photo's other than pics so I know how it goes back together! Here a few that I have taken so far. Plans are to lay down some yellow paint on Saturday and do the white stuff on Monday if the weather holds out. I had trouble getting the front axle off. The pin seized in the axle and broke the roll pin that holds it on and then destroyed the bracket by ovaling out the holes on both sides. So i cut the bracket off at the factory welds, got a suitable replacement and then welded the new one back on. Anyone have any tips on cleaning up these rubber seats? This is the first cub I've ever restored so it's been an educational experience! Also here is a pic of my 104 i use for plowing
WHX?? 48,779 #21 Posted September 2, 2020 Now we're talking Mike! Those trannies look like their beasts, hate to get greedy here but any pics of the innards? On the seat try TSP or bleach white. Is there a white rubber paint like for tires that would resto it? I know Dan @Achto painted some white walls on tires on his RR that appears to be holding up well? Gotta love the HY set upon the plow mule! I often say if I wasn't a freak my next choice would be these older Cubs or Cases.

I used Ranger white wall tire paint on my RR. Not sure how well it would hold up with yer but rubbing on the seat. I would try some Super Clean or Purple Power to clean it up before I would try painting it. Edited September 2, 2020 by Achto

I did take the shifter off the top and took the back plate off to replace the gasket and clean it out. I'm telling you those transmission are indestructible and extremely heavy! It's the same transmission that is used on the farmall cub. On the 104, I had to replace the whole clutch driveshaft and everything because it was wore out and left go too long. It pulls that plow like it's nobody's business!
WVHillbilly520H 10,373 #24 Posted September 3, 2020 They are basically an automotive transmission attached directly to a rear differential/axle... I have been in a few over the years the later MTD aluminium housing versions (I had a rare 1989 CCC 1050 that I traded in on the new 520H) gear drives aren't as good as the original cast iron housings (but they have better axles/splines the pullers look for...
WHX?? 48,779 #25 Posted September 3, 2020 Very interesting Jeffery.... I gotta check those out on a big screen tho. I have no idea how you manage on a stupid phone. Possible I am stupid. Interesting how they made the transition direction from parallel to perpendicular to the frame.
