ebinmaine 67,274 #2 Posted August 31, 2020 I'm thinking wrap that tube in heat resistant fiberglass mat. @Achto @Greentored You boys got any ideas?
Achto 27,504 #3 Posted August 31, 2020 Wrapping the baffle tube with fiber glass would help some. A stopper plug/plate 1/2 way up the baffle tube may do more to quiet it down. This would force the exhaust out into the outer chamber then it would return to the inside of the baffle tube to exit. If you choose to try this method do not wrap the baffle tube with fiber glass.
Greentored 3,201 #4 Posted August 31, 2020 If theyre straight through, stuff/wrap with fiberglass. More holes would help if you go that route. Like @Achto said a plug in the middle will help a lot, but (obviously) dont do fiberglass if you use a plug, the exhaust gases need to pass through those holes, then back around on the opposite side. Thanks @ebinmaine for tagging me in this- I have the Tractor Supply FO-4 (or FO-3, cant remember) on my 1277 and am in the same boat right now trying to tone it down. It has the plug in the center. Its actually pretty mellow, but with the 1277 being hydro and slinging a 42" deck, its under constant load and barks too much for the ears. Just ordered a Gravely style muffler and plan to extend a stack on it, and will stuff the stack if its still too loud.

Might try the plug first but I have to silent them some lol ty all for ideas I wasnt sure what I'd do. With the plug do I need more hole above the plug or not? Here is some pictures of a stack that I made for my plow tractor. I cut almost all the way through the baffle, welded my stopper plate in, then inserted the baffle in to the stack. It is still a little load but bearable. Your outside housing has a larger o.d. so you will have more room for resonation to suppress noise. I don't think that you will need to add holes. CCW 1,292 #9 Posted September 2, 2020 I am looking forward to a quieter muffler. Guess I will have to start playing around with this myself.
DarrellF 33 #10 Posted September 2, 2020 It helped I welded a washer shut and cut a slit in the baffles right in the middle I'll try and get a video of both my 200s one has original mufflers and the one I just did.
CCW 1,292 #11 Posted September 3, 2020 A very interesting article on muffler design. https://www.dragzine.com/tech-stories/exhaust/understanding-muffler-design-and-sound-absorption-strategies/

Very interesting. I've read that in the past as well.
