Magnums use a magneto system other than the air gap .012 to .016  (module to flywheel magnet) there is nothing you do. No timing to set.

That's what I was thinking too. Thanks for confirming. 

Ugh. I'm going to try putting a new plug in this thing and continue checking for anything loose. However, I'm going to bet I'll end up replacing the rod/bearings and/or removing the balance gears (maybe). 

 

I did some research while waiting at the dentist earlier and read a lot about removing balance gears, but about all I read about those were for the Kohler K series engines, not Magnums. So, not even sure if I can remove them, or if it's advisable on a Magnum. They called them "grenade gears" because they can blow a hole in your block. I'm sure this isn't news to you guys, but it's new to me since I'm still learning.

I took a break from this for a couple weeks while I had other things going on. I started'er up again today and it sounds worse. Now I'm really hearing it from the flywheel side pretty bad. I haven't taken the flywheel off yet. 

It charges fine. Seeing 14+V on voltmeter when running.

Another update. 

I wanted to take off the flywheel but couldn't get it to break loose with the puller. It got dark on me so I couldn't continue.

Anyway, here's a bouncey video of me moving the flywheel back and forth. Something sounded a little loose inside the crank case itself, but maybe you guys would say different. I know that the "click" noise is from the magneto (if using correct terms). This sounded more like something loose. After I did the video, I also spun it over with my socket wrench and could hear it more on the PTO side. I have noticed that the PTO is rather noise when engaged - a constant whining sound. Not like any of my others (Onan or Kohler). Yet the PTO pulley itself rotates easily and doesn't sound rough when spun by hand. 

 

Any tips on getting this flywheel off since the fins are plastic? 

 

I think I just need to take this engine off and see if I can see anything loose on the rod.

Use a Harmonic Balancer Puller. After you remove the bolt that retains the flywheel two bolts will thread into two of the small holes in the flywheel. Once secured then tighten down on the puller and give the puller bolt a good smack with a hammer to shock it then tighten more if needed.

Yep, that's exactly what I have and hit it quite a few times with a large/heavy hammer already. 

Part of my issue is that I cannot secure the flywheel enough to get the puller extremely tight. And the fins are plastic, so I haven't found a way to keep it from spinning over when I try to tighten the puller. 

I'll try again either today or soon when I have more time and daylight.

You can tighten the puller with an impact gun, then hit the end of the puller bolt with a hammer.  It should pop right off.  Bill
