Bryan85 3 #1 Posted August 28, 2020 I have a 1988 416-8 I bought a 7473 belt from the dealer but I put it on and as soon as I pressed the clutch the belt popped off not sure what's going on.
Achto 27,751 #2 Posted August 28, 2020 Do you have the belt guard on? The belt guard works as the guide for the belt and also stops the belt when you push the clutch in so that you can shift gears. 3
Bryan85 3 #3 Posted August 28, 2020 Yes I feel like the belt might be to big

Sparky-(Admin) 21,405 #6 Posted August 28, 2020 That is the correct part number for a 416/8...was it new in the package? Did he sell you an aftermarket belt saying it was the equivalent of a Wheel Horse 7473?
clueless 3,011 #7 Posted August 28, 2020 Is the belt installed according the the manual, IE - routing?

Is the belt routed under the tabs that hold it onto the engine pulley? How dose it compare to the old belt?
Bryan85 3 #10 Posted August 29, 2020 Thank you for all the welcome's and this is how I have it on and thank you all for helping. Got it new in the package with only the number 7430 on it it's an Oregon replacement belt
Bryan85 3 #11 Posted August 29, 2020 (edited) It doesn't seem tight the tension pulley doesn't seem far enough up and the pedal does not feel the same Edited August 29, 2020 by Bryan85 Spelled wrong
The Tuul Crib 7,337 #12 Posted August 29, 2020 The belt In the picture looks a little tight. 7473 is the correct part number . I went through the same thing until I got the right one and it all came down to the measurement and the fact that I had a aftermarket belt that was too small. The idler pulley looks like it's too far forward.
Bryan85 3 #13 Posted August 29, 2020 So I just need to buy a Toro brand belt?
The Tuul Crib 7,337 #14 Posted August 29, 2020 (edited) Might be bit more than the others. At least it would be the correct one. I went thru three different ones before l got an oem or toro belt that fit perfect. I just went to eBay and typed in wheelhors7473 oem belt. There are three different ones for around 35 bucks. Bill D 1,933 #15 Posted August 29, 2020 (edited) The belt looks a little tight. Are your belt guides in place on the engine. There should be one on the top and bottom of the engine. Are they bent at all? OEM belts are best on Kohler and Briggs equipped tractors. I have a TSC belt on my Onan powered 416-8. squonk 41,321 #22 Posted August 30, 2020 I have 5 Wheelhorse tractors all with aftermarket belts. All with no issues. You need to compare the belt you get with the old belt. The belt looked to short. The belt should be 5/8" x 82" You don't have to have an OEM belt.
