I have a 1988 416-8 I bought a 7473 belt from the dealer but I put it on and as soon as I pressed the clutch the belt popped off not sure what's going on.

Do you have the belt guard on? The belt guard works as the guide for the belt and also stops the belt when you push the clutch in so that you can shift gears.

That is the correct part number for a 416/8...was it new in the package? Did he sell you an aftermarket belt saying it was the equivalent of a Wheel Horse 7473?

When the belt is installed and the clutch pedal is up does the belt seem tight? Is the belt routed under the tabs that hold it onto the engine pulley? How dose it compare to the old belt?

It doesn't seem tight the tension pulley doesn't seem far enough up and the pedal does not feel the same

The belt In the picture looks a little tight. 7473 is the correct part number . I went through the same thing until I got the right one and it all came down to the measurement and the fact that I had a aftermarket belt that was too small. The idler pulley looks like it's too far forward.

Might be bit more than the others.
At least it would be the correct one. I

went thru three different ones before l

got an oem or toro belt that fit perfect.
I just went to eBay and typed in

wheelhors7473 oem belt. There

are three different ones for around 35 bucks.

The belt looks a little tight.  Are your belt guides in place on the engine. There should be one on the top and bottom of the engine.  Are they bent at all?  OEM belts are best on Kohler and Briggs equipped tractors.  I have a TSC belt on my Onan powered 416-8.  Bill

Just to add, I too went though this with my 418. 3 belts and finally went to Toro and it fit .  It was 50 bucks but it was a half size that no one else had... Cheers

There should be a tab over the idler to retain the belt.

and hopefully if you get a Toro OEM belt it will be a real ( wrapped / molded ) OEM belt :

I have 5 Wheelhorse tractors all with aftermarket belts. All with no issues. You need to compare the belt you get with the old belt. The belt looked to short. The belt should be 5/8" x 82" You don't have to have an OEM belt.
