Gordyhogg 150 #1 Posted August 25, 2020 (edited) anybody know what kind of transmission is in my 656? i'll need help ordering parts. I already have new 1533's in the box need to crack it apart n see what else needs done. Took me a while but i did manage to get the big pin out of the back. Alot of heat/pb blaster, parafin wax, cussing, a sawzall and an air hammer but it came out! Things i know i want to replace for sure: -3rd gear -brake shaft seal -input shaft seal -axle seals -axle needle bearings -possibly 1533's (but i have them) Thanks! Gordyhogg 150 #2 Posted August 25, 2020 Is this correct?
Achto 27,504 #3 Posted August 25, 2020 (edited) Check the transmission guide to find your model on his site. Lowell will have every thing that you need. I would just order a complete rebuild kit without the 1533's then add the #3523 2nd/3rd gear. https://www.wheelhorsepartsandmore.com/transmissions.html Edited August 25, 2020 by Achto

stevasaurus 22,707 #5 Posted August 25, 2020 Yes, the PDF is correct. The 656 horse came with a 5053 transmission.

Gordyhogg 150 #13 Posted August 26, 2020 Thanks! @Achto so if i get the #1 kit and 3rd gear im looking at 234.66 wasnt really looking to spend that much. I may just crack it open and replace as needed. Plys if i buy the kit i already have a good shift boot from another horse. Gotta try to keep the wife happy too lol 1
Achto 27,504 #14 Posted August 26, 2020 If the tractor likes to pop out of 3rd while you're driving, I would definitely recommend replacing it. I have to go back into one of mine because I thought the gear looked fine. I thought wrong.
oliver2-44 9,684 #15 Posted August 26, 2020 Before you split open the tranny check if the input shaft has any in/out movement. If it does, measure it with a dial indicator or some feeler gauges behind the pulley. You want to put an arbor shim that thickness under the input pulley to tighten that up to where there is almost no movement. 1
stevasaurus 22,707 #16 Posted August 26, 2020 You probably do not need to replace everything in the case. Open it up, see what is bad...and you can order just what you need from Lowell. He will sell by the piece. Don't forget the #3912 gasket.

Any idea where to get the shims at?

As much as id like it all to be brand new im on a budget plus i still need to rebuild the 8 horse and finish painting everything
stevasaurus 22,707 #19 Posted August 26, 2020 No need to replace good parts...except seals...replace all seals.

This thing leaks out of every single seal for sure. How much in and out play is acceptible on the input shaft?
Gordyhogg 150 #21 Posted August 27, 2020 (edited) Cracked er open last night...man was that a pain! One of the six bolts holding the two halves together had a totally stripped head on it and it was the one in the middle on the top which made it difficult to ge to with vice grips but i managed to get a hold of it. As far as bearings go every one looked ok except for the outer axle needle bearings were both half gone. Found 3rd gear and man does it look chewed up! Also noticed this little gear has wear on it...anyone know which one it is and if it is ok to reuse? Edited August 27, 2020 by Gordyhogg

Gordyhogg 150 #24 Posted August 27, 2020 (edited) @oliver2-44 do i need to get a new gear? And what size and where do i get shims? I just ordered 3rd gear, all 4 seals, a gasket, and the axle needle bearings but not sure if i have to replace that other one in the 3rd or 4th pic Edited August 27, 2020 by Gordyhogg
WHX?? 48,777 #25 Posted August 27, 2020 (edited) This is the 3rd gear and it is definitely shot... replace it This is the reverse idler and rounded is usually found due shifting while not fully stopped or finding reverse with clutching issues. make sure it goes back in the way it came out. In other words follow the manual! Edited August 27, 2020 by WHX24
