(and I am a Dodge guy) I have had most all of them, the newer trucks are far safer. Much better brakes, transmissions and overall control. Comfortable. One thing I have found out when talking to folks, it seems people gauge how well something will preform outside of it's limitations. You know the JAWS thing....we are going to need a bigger boat! As far as technology, even 10/15 year old technology can be a challenge to shade tree mechanics. You have to go back pretty far to get into that super simple era. I look at it kind of like this; if I was getting surgery, I wouldn't want to be wheeled into an OR and see an old DOS computer fired up at the ready!

It'd been being talked about since the hellcat came out a few years ago. What do I think of it? I think it's frickin' cool. Love the supercharger whine. Only thing I really dislike about it (and the rest of the 5th gen half ton Rams for that matter) is that it is 6 lug.. Been big ford 5 lug forever but they had to change it. Now all we need is for Chevy do to the same with one of their trucks, and we'll have a good old fashioned brawl.. I've heard that the Raptor will have a v8 next year which will be cool. Never liked that they put a V6 in it. The EcoBoost is cool and all, but anyone that i've ever talked to said they were gutless for towing even though they had good torque numbers.. I can't really say I get where some of you are coming from when you're talking about it being difficult to work on/diagnose if it ever has any issues. All cars 1996+ are OBD2 and all you need is a simple tester to find out what is wrong for the most part. The fact that it "goes fast" doesn't make it any different than any other modern car that relies heavily on electronics. We use eco-boosts for work and if somebody said they are gutless for towing they’ve never driven one. They pull like a diesel and will absolutely walk away from a big block V-8 when towing. Plus, they do it at very low RPMs because that’s where they generate their power. Plus they are very fast. It’s fun to know that you can walk away from literally any stock truck of any manufacturer at a stoplight if you want to.
Pullstart 62,789 #28 Posted August 25, 2020 (edited) Lots of good discussion here! I too agree, the days of old are simpler and “easy” horsepower, “there’s no replacement for displacement.” On the other hand, I’ve successfully swapped a fuel injected engine in place for a carburetor in my buggy, going from a 1641 to a 2500 and 50-ish hp to 165 hp, I have a brand new computerized small engine turbo truck and enjoy the competition that the new engines from the manufacturers are providing. Back to the first hand, I have a dinosaur flip phone and use it with pride when I talk to people on the phone Edited August 26, 2020 by pullstart Double checked the power of the EJ25... 1
ohiofarmer 3,265 #29 Posted August 25, 2020 on the midsize trucks..... I was looking for a dependable car or truck that was easy to travel in, and after repeated and repeated problems with GM cars [ my 04 bonneville 3.8 keeps eating ignition coils] I got a Toyota rav 4 hybrid. one year of ownership and zero problems. Fuel mileage was 37 when new and now is now about 40 MPG The last year for single cab Tacomas was 2018 and they were under 20 grand. The only option i wanted was a trailer hitch and block heater , but my wife said no way to another truck as our primary vehicle. Now they are 27000 or so stripped. That is a lot for a rear seat or whatever they put back there. Nobody has a single cab truck.any more Hochiro Honda came to this country to see for himself how Americans were using his motorcycles. He saw at once how tall and heavy the typical rider was who was not riding Hondas [and some that were] . The CB750 was born shortly after and became known as the Harley Killer. I point this out because my knees do not fit under the steering wheel of a Taco. If they ever get a steering wheel like the Rav 4, I might just buy one.All i see on the car reports are this package and that package out to 2022, but i want to know when they will put on a Rav 4 steering wheel My 2002 ram 3500 Cummins diesel was about 26 grand. It needs rear axle repair because I did not notice a seal leaking which caused a dry bearing.Single cab with window cranks, so repairing it makes pretty good sense. 1

I've only had first-hand experience with one when towing, pulling a '70 Charger on a dolly. It was fine when on flat ground, but get to any kind of an incline and it was in the 4500-5000 RPM range to keep us going 60 MPH. The rest I've heard of are accounts of people I know, mainly pulling campers that were decently sized but well within the advertised towing capabilities. I will say they are impressively quick when they're empty. I wouldn't go as far to say they will walk away from a big block when towing, unless maybe it's a smog 80s 454 with all of 210 HP. Might be going a bit far to say they can walk away from "literally" any stock truck..

Might be going a bit far to say they can walk away from "literally" any stock truck.. I’ve actually been more impressed when towing. I have big block trucks and one diesel and it is comparable to the diesel when towing our 7000 pound trailers. In fact there’s a hill that we go up all the time and the diesel will only maintain speed but the eco-boosts will go as fast as you want to up that same hill. That eco-boost was a 3.5 L but it only had 3.15 gears and it still was a towing monster. The truck I use for work now is only a 2.7 L which is only 165 in.³ I use it to tow a 6000 pound trailer with ease on the interstate at 70 mph and it never gets above 2500 RPMs even in the Ozark hills. It’s a 10 speed so I lock out ninth and 10th gear and put it in tow/haul mode and it rarely shifts out of 8th gear. With regard to walking away from any stock truck, if you pull up to somebody in an eco-boost with a four-wheel-drive and you give each other a nod, if you see them turn the knob to four-wheel-drive, either be prepared to see tail lights or just look the other way. If it’s a 2 WD you might have a chance because they will not maintain any type of traction below 40 mph. I’m not tuned but here are some figures before and after a simple tune. These tiny turbo engines are rockets. And we have several that are trouble free after a couple hundred thousand miles so they’ve been rocksolid also. I'm surprised that the 2.7 did a quicker 0-60 pull stock compared to the 3.5. Maybe they perform differently at different elevations, though I'd think the computer would compensate for it. I've just not had the same experience in terms of towing performance.
