Our new beige grass

Recommended Posts

With the moderate drought we have beige grass.

Pic looking up toward the shop. It has been six weeks now not cutting the grass on this hill.

How dry are you?

At our place we have had rain off and on but not much this year so far. I mow about every 2 to 3 weeks instead of the normal of once a week.

Not much for rain in central Wisconsin either. Last Thursday was the first time that had mowed lawn in 4 weeks, & that was just to knock the tall weeds down that some how still manage to grow. Looking at local corn fields is pretty sad also. Corn that should maturing and making ears is starting to turn brown with only small ears to show.

joem, yes , i have the same brown look on my lawn , it just steadily faded from heat and lack of water , my lawn was , solid green and regularly cut , now the only grass i have is in tree shaded areas , it will be back as the weather cools and fall rains feed it , pete

Over 16 inches in my back yard in the last two months down here, and a 1 1/4 inch torrent in less than 35 minutes yesterday afternoon. Looks like both hurricanes will miss me, but still going to get rain from them. Dog Days in the south, you gotta love 'em .

Had 4" Friday morning that caused some major flash flooding here in SWVA. My grass is growing like it is May due to the ongoing rain. Forecast is four days without rain this week and this summer that is rare. This is the third time this spring & summer that we have had major flash flooding which is rare.

Absolutely perfect weather here, extremely hot and enough rain to give me the most perfect crop of crabgrass ever!

Yep, plenty of green here in SC  PeeAaa  Joe.   We got a good soaker last night and the neighbors were busy early this morning.     I have been mowing every 5-8 days all summer.

We get more rain from the costal storms than you guys get in SW Pa.

Used my other red tractor (she is 76 years old) to help a neighbor by doing some raking on a second cutting this weekend.  Pitiful, grass was only a few inches high..  Been very dry since first cutting.  (Note ..wife took pictures and labeled them she doesn't understand rake vs Tedding...)

in SW PA - this summer has been one of the hotter summers and also dry

a number of days 90+ degrees - and I believe around 3" below average precipitation

lots of dead / dormant (?) brown grass and weeds

ground hard as a rock

very different than previous two years - previous two years were among the wettest on record

hottest summer in my area I can recall was 1988

1988 stats :

38 days of 90°+ temperatures

13 days of 95°+ temperatures

3 days of 100°+ temperatures

( 13 consec days of 90+ temps )

high temp one day in 1988 was 103

I went dirt bike riding that day with a small group - we did a 100 mile ride on the PA National Forest Marienville loop

it was 103 in our area that day - but 'only' 98 or so for a high two hours north in Marienville  lol

at the time - the Marienville loop was around 30 miles ;  it has been reduced since then

we did three 30 mile loops - then went 5 miles in and returned 5 miles to get to the 100 miles
