Gracie's Dad 155 #1 Posted August 23, 2020 I know that the workhorses had Briggs and Stratton engines, but we're the transmissions in them the same as the standard wheelhorse 8 speeds...3 forward and one reverse in both high and low range? Would they be interchangeable?
Pullstart 62,791 #2 Posted August 23, 2020 They are interchangeable, but might be a 1” axle when you might have 1-1/8” in, say a C series.
TonyToro 1,044 #3 Posted August 23, 2020 We have a couple Workhorses and they have the smaller 1” axle But so far seem just as strong as the 1 1/8”.
JAinVA 4,619 #4 Posted August 23, 2020 (edited) Whether the 1" axled or 1 1/8" axled transaxle is in your machine only matters if you plan to use ground engaging equipment like a turn plow. The 1" axles are stout enough and the basic structure is more than rugged enough for general mowing or snow blowing. The lighter duty transaxle is far stronger than anything you will ever find in a mower at a box store. If you have a Grey Workhorse then in answer to your question is the transaxles from any C series up will bolt in. Gracie's Dad 155 #5 Posted August 24, 2020 I appreciate the input, I was curious if swapping a wheelhorse 8 speed into a workhorse 16-42 would require anything more than bolting it up to the frame, unmodified? 1
peter lena 8,580 #6 Posted August 24, 2020 gracies dad , make sure you take the time to thoroughly flush out and dran that gear box , being unbolted from the frame you can really get the debris out , new shifter boot , mabey adjust the detent screw for better shifting, 75-140 gear oil , get some hours on that and flush again , that would insure a good flush and verify your operation . pete
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,032 #7 Posted August 24, 2020 The LT-Series of Work Horse used Peerless 3 and 5 speed transmissions. Garry
Shuboxlover 478 #8 Posted September 3, 2020 I'm certain (as a fellow Workhorse owner myself) that they indeed have the 1" axles AND certain that they have a 4 pinion differential (instead of the eight). As said above, STILL stronger than anything you can buy at a big box store today!!! My Workhorse is the one that got me started in all this (I inherited it from my grandfather after he passed away)
