Pullstart 62,879 #1 Posted August 23, 2020 The groom to be will be my cousin in just three weeks! He has mentioned for a year or so that he has a Dixon ZTR I can have, he hasn’t been able to make it operate right. Me thinks this is the perfect crawler project opportunity. It has a Magnum 16 Kohler and runs well he says... and will bring it over some time soon. If anyone has any first hand experience, I’m all ears!
D_Mac 8,619 #2 Posted August 23, 2020 (edited) I have had a couple of them. My experience with them is that if something ever went wrong with them I wouldnt be able to repair them. Out of my skill set. Cone drive looked very complex and the machines didnt seem to be very durable. The smaller one I had sat so low to the ground was very difficult to get in and out of. The larger one was ok but just not my cup of tea. I have had several zero turns never really cared for any of them. I like having a steering wheel ! Out of my skill set Friend of my son has one - an older one - and something in the drive train went out. After searching for months never found it, ended up at machine shop to have one custom made .... he wouldnt tell what the cost was but was apparently shocking, he said "never again"
SPINJIM 1,981 #4 Posted August 23, 2020 Friend of mine bought one, and had many problems with it in the first year. Most Dixons have the Chinese-made Kohler Courage, that I wouldn't want. I researched zero-turns for my church, and eliminated the Dixons pretty quickly. If i really has a Kohler Magnum, the engine might be okay, but I don't know about the drive train. Of course, the price is right (free) as long as your friend won't be insulted if you decide not to keep it for long. Jim 2

Achto 27,575 #7 Posted August 24, 2020 There has been a couple of Dixon's at my parents house. The first one had the cone drive system - out right POS !!! Only lasted 3 years. The one that resides there now has two hydro motors to drive the rear wheels, much better set up. This mower has been in service for 6 plus years or more. The B&S engine has been replaced once due to a lack of maintenance but that's another story that I care not to get into. 2

In other words your brothers did not bother to check the oil? Somewhere in here I have I have a pic of a Dixon that the wheel fell off .... or was it a Dixie Chopper??? Close enough for the women we go out with! Either way it was considered a high end ZT. Knowing the owner who is a little hard on the equipment me thinks he run it hard and put away wet is always the culprit.

rjg854 11,361 #10 Posted August 24, 2020 I had a Dixon for a few years before I upgraded. I had pretty good luck with it, course if I remember right , I was always tinkering with something on it. But for the most part it was reliable, and ended up selling for a decent price, when I bought a brand new, Bad Dog.
