Hey everyone, I got a new old tractor about a year ago now that sat for a few years. The carb was toast so I ordered a new one I ordered a cheap ebay one and another 1 off isavetractors.com. they are both the same so i threw one on and i cant for the life of me get it run right. I have the high idle fine it runs smooth wide open but when i throttle down to idle it pops and starts to die. I can have it slightly higher than idle and its fine but a normal idle wont happen. I seem like my adjustments are wacky. I have 5 turns out on the high and 2 turns out on low. When start to fiddle with it I cant get it to run right at all. (New plug,cleaned fuel tank,new filter and cleaned points and reset governor)

Start with 2-1/2 idle & 3-1/4 high.  Keep the engine idling slow and adjust the idle mixture to best setting.  Then proceed to the high and adjust so that you get strong response when quickly opening the throttle.

Check your fuel lines & add a filter/replace as needed. Check the tank for rust and other nasties that could be plugging up even a new carburetor. 

Knock on wood I've had good luck so far with the cheap knock off carbs.

Are the eBay carb and the I Save Tractor carb new or used? If used, I would pull the main jet needle out and clean it. I am posting a picture that I pulled from the internet courtesy of OutdoorPowerInfo.com.

 

Notice the circles showing tiny holes in the needle. Make sure that all of those holes are clean and that you can pass air or carburetor cleaner all the way through the hollow needle from one end to the other.  After doing that, reinstall the needle and set it at the suggested number of turns out from bottom and adjust from there as suggested above.

 

Good luck. This usually works for me.

Although you have cleaned the points I would suggest checking the ignition timing with a timing light. Points adjustment changes timing and if it isn;t right there is a good chance the carburetor adjustment will not respond correctly.

Right away Richard has to go and get technical on us .....but he is right. I can USUALLY  get them dialed in with the 020 points setting but sometimes...

I'd agree with setting the points but my first thought was... Why was the original carb "toast"?

 

I'm NOT a fan of cheap aftermarket carbs...

If you still have the original, rebuild it. 

 

I'll be curious to see what the final solve is.

Thanks for the replys guys I will look into setting the timing, the carb I replaced it with was new. The original or what seems it (tractor was restored about 20years ago) looks like it had water im the bowl and some bad fuel. I suppose I could do a rebuild and run that one. The tractor sat for a number of years.

Did you replace fuel lines? Filter? Gas? 

 

Start simple. Unfortunately, to get these running like they did in the...60's...70's...80's...you need to spend the time and the $ to do it. Don't expect miracles. The carb is but one part of the system.
