‘78 C-141 transmission service

Recommended Posts

Midl-life wheel horse crisis has led me to find another wheel horse to share with my daughter for her new home.   So, I Picked up a ‘78 C-141 with the Sundstrand hydro.  I’m thinking to go through a full service of engine and transmission, plug, plus anything to make it run and cut smoothly etc.....

Engine Oil easy, but I see that this transmission has a filter and suggests 10W-30 oil for the transmission, 5.5 Qrts from what I’m reading.  From the schematics I see the filter and have a new filter on the way with some other parts,  but is the drain plug is where ?

Also, is it really traditional 10-30 motor oil ?   I’m used to the 85w-140 gear oil in the ‘73 Raider 10.   Any suggestions and direction on the drain plug would be greatly appreciated.

Hydro 10w-30 yes, 5.5 quarts bone dry, fill up using the dipstick and recheck after start up. Drain plug in the center, bottom right behind the hitch and requires a 1/4" allen hex wrench. can be tight. When refilling you can remove one of the 3/8" bolts holding seat pan assy. to allow air to escape and the oil to fill much faster.

Thanks Joe !   So the oil IS 10-30 Engine oil and not a hydrostatic oil ?

Mike, make sure your Sundstrand has motor oil in it now.    It should be amber in color.    If it is pink in color, then it has ATF and you don't want to mix the two fluids.

If it is amber, then use the 10-30 engine oil  like Joe says,    not hydraulic oil or heavy gear oil or ATF.

An noted above, it takes 5.5 quarts bone dry.  Since you won't drain it completely it will probable take something around 4.5 quarts.  i use Moble 1 synthetic 10w30 in my Sundstrands!
