Reddart 212 #1 Posted August 18, 2020 My horse (C101) now doesn’t start. The starter motor turns, but the engine doesn’t engage or turn at all. I did notice a funny noise the last few times I turned off the motor. Any ideas on the problem?

gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,243 #3 Posted August 19, 2020 Standing on the right side of the tractor you can use a long thin screw driver or similar to push on the back of the bendix drive which should advance it into the flywheel. A spring should push it back to you. Do that a few times and see if it will work. May have enough dust on the shaft to make it bind. You do not want to oil it because that attracts more dust. An aerosol graphite lubricant is best applied to the shaft. Garry

Reddart 212 #5 Posted August 19, 2020 Thanks guys, that sounds like that would be the problem (had to look up starter bendix....as long as Ive dealt with cars and engines, never had A starter/bendix problem...learn something every day here ). My C101 earned her keep today, I plowed about 5 yards of a 10 yard pile of gravel for my driveway today. I parked it and ate dinner, then tried to start it to give my daughter a ride in the cart, and that’s when it wouldn’t start.
Reddart 212 #6 Posted August 19, 2020 Now thinking about the funny noise I heard when I turned it off...I wonder if that was the bendix sticking up on the gear, and that it is now fubar...haven’t had a chance to look at it further yet as it’s dark outside now. 953 nut 57,904 #7 Posted August 19, 2020 One other thing to check would be the starter mounting bolts, if they are not tight the torque of the starter motor will cause it to move away from the engine's flywheel.
Reddart 212 #8 Posted August 19, 2020 While I’m trying to see if this is fixable, what would be the replacement starter I would get for a C101, assuming it is stock and original K241 to the tractor? I see that the #of teeth can vary?
Reddart 212 #9 Posted August 19, 2020 Well it was a stuck bendix. I think the dusty pushing gravel work contributed to it. It loosened up with some firm prodding with a screwdriver. I shot in a little graphite spray for good measure. Sure am glad it wasn’t anything more than that. Thanks guys!
