Power Coating, Good Idea? Wheel Weights?

Recommended Posts

71_Bronco

Recently picked up a set of Wheel Horse (style) cast iron weights (ring style for rear wheels).

I was thinking about re-painting them, and for haha's, had a local shop quote me to have them blasted, cleaned, and powder coated. Cost quoted was $80 each.

Reason I thought of powder coating, is how exposed they are on the back wheels, and that the powder coat would be a little more durable than paint, especially if they are going to be removed and bolted on often.

Is my logic sound? Or would I be better off with paint?

Obviously touch-up would be much easier with a painted finish.

I've seen powder coat chip just like paint. I would paint them a couple of coats of Rustoleum enamel then about 3 coats of Rustoleum gloss clear.

Why would the weights be removed frequently?  I have the plastic ones on my 312, and the only time I have removed them was to pull the wheel off to replace a tire.

I don't have plans to frequently remove them, but who knows what the future holds.

If you think that is money well spent then go for it.Back in the day the local dealer quoted a similar price for the plastic covered concrete wheel weights2018_08_02_1843.JPG.37f37a517e21d72f459e6f94b0e59867.JPG.I cast my own and thirty years later with rattle can touch ups they are still just as heavy.

$80 each is pretty high.  $80 for the pair sounds more like it.  If the price wasn't so high I'd say get them coated, but for the money they want I'd just paint them.

160 for powder coating is more than the weights are worth, some good enamel paint they will be fine

Thanks guys for the replys.

They dont look too bad as they are, but who knows what I will find once I remove them from the wheels.

I do agree that $160 is a little high, but I've never had anything quoted before, so didn't know how that price was.

Think I'm just going to get a couple cans of enamel and call it a day.

maybe there is a high(er) quality enamel or epoxy based paint that will do the job
