Changing bearings on the 701 CBR- 327 chain drive sickle mower

Recommended Posts

Lane Ranger

I bought some new Torrington B-2212 needle bearings to put in the 701 Sickle Bar Mower.   The drive shaft is not turning like I think it should.  Removed the spring, removed drive shaft pulley, shaft and bracket.    Shaft showed signs of wear or rust from bearing so I used Emory tape to clean up the shaft.  Removed old bearings from bracket and replaced.  Going to put on the 701 today to test out.   Noticed a spot on bracket missing something (in yellow). Not sure if it is a set screw or grease fitting.  Checked with Ryan Transue and his 701 chain drive CBR-327 sickle bar mower has a grease fitting in that spot.

Going to add the new repo chain guard bracket and the Bolens sickle bar diverter in front later this week!

LANE RANGER , I WOULD AGREE WITH RYAN ON THE GREASE FITTING.  I would also detail those needle bearings with lucas , red n tacky or lucas heavy duty grease , its 550 drop point will stay with that tough lubrication issue . you might even hook that up to a 1/2" variable speed drill , just to watch its function , and zero in on unstable or dragging points. that chain drive will work like it should with (  lubriplate  gear shield extra heavy lubricant  )

i have run in drives / equipment at a slower speed to see how it functions , and often found big gains in detailing its movement points. just my own experience , pete

Great job Lane, it’s really coming out nice and I appreciate seeing this thing apart for when I go to do mine.

Put the 701 CBR-327 sickle mower on the 701 tractor this am.  Hooked up the two b  egg Ltd yo run it.  This 702 has a hydraulic pump on it so one race on motor drive pulley taken up.  Ran motor to my own pto creation with a three race pulley on a 3/4 inch rod.  Put a collar on opposite end of rod to keep from having much left to right movement.  Belt from sickle drive pulley to lower PTO pulley is a 3/8 x 19 belt.  Motor to PTO drive pulley is a 1/2 x 25.    I have video of it running.

I am trying to correct too much play in clutch system. Parts are old and worn and I may need to change the clutch pedal setup. I put a larger roll pin to hold clutch pedal.  Sickle will not move now when first starting the tractor but the  motor to PTO belt slowly engages  and starts the sickle moving even without engaging clutch and idler pulley.

I am thinking the lift bar may need to be shortened so I am going to make a new one out of an old bad clutch rod.  Going to shorten it 1 1/2 to 2 inches.  That should help loosen the motor to pto drive belt when lifted by the HY unit.

I also have to put the CBR-327 chain drive guard ( which is a reproduction) on.  I painted it today to look like the patina on the sickle!

Looks like your missing the idle stop bracket.

I think that is the trick!

Thank you  WH315-8.    I will  get one on and try!

I also am making a shorter lift rod as that will keep the sickle more higher up and loosen the chain drive to PTO belt a bit and the HY lift has plenty of room to lower the sickle!

Today I added the chain drive  guard and put a shorter lift rod on the sickle to see if the belt tension was reduced to stop the sickle!   The chain drive guard is s reproduction so I gave it a patina paint job !  Painted with combination of regal red, flat black and  red Rustoleum primer !     I am having a shorter lift rod than the original 12 inch one made to change the highs of the sickle when not in use. 70F49ED3-EBC7-40C3-8821-C76AA0235991.jpeg.d352ff4d4a5b711b46f25756904d45f1.jpeg
