Was mowing and went to put in reverse and shifter pulled right out... don’t think I will find the set screw.  Is this easy fix ???

Attached pic.  Is this broken right off or still repairable?

any help greatly appreciated

:text-imsorry:    I answered your other post not knowing it had broken off. Call Lincoln at A-Z Tractor, he will fix you up. https://a-ztractor.com/

Once you have the replacement shift lever the other post will come in handy.

So I just need a new set screw?  The pics I posted are normal gear shifter? And I just need part (s).  Panic or don’t panic?

You need another shifter also.

What is missing is the donut and the sprial pin that secures the donut to the shifter.

With luck the dog-point setscrew is still engaged in the donut. Back out the setsrew and retrieve the end of the shifter with a magnet.

Hi garry

your saying my shifter has parts missing? Or part of shifter broken off?

when I look at the parts diagram I only see

the set screw / nut/ and rubber boot

along with shifter which does not look like my pics?

The red line is the hole through the shifter where yours broke off.

Set screw goes thru that donut?  So donut just broke or cracked off?   Where can the other end of the shift rod be?   Pictures posted by 953 nut shows the end of that rod looking like a ball? Rounded

Remove the rubber boot and look down into the top of the transmission (like the pic in the thread 953 posted)  hopefully you will see the "donut' part of your shifter still setting in there.  There was a pin that went through the donut and the shift rod.  Is part of the pin still in the shift rod, if so thats good. You should try to get any missing parts of the pin out of the transmission.  Possible fishing around with a magnet, or draining the tranny, jacking the front up and flushing some diesel or kerosene through it to flush it out.

Thanks for all your help here.  This forum is awesome.  I’ve had to reference this site numerous times for previous repairs however this was first where I’ve had to seek help from the pros.   See what I find today / was getting late and dark last night . After 32 years I think I may have gotten my pennies worth and push me over the edge to get a new zero turn.  Hopefully I could resurrect!   Thanks again

My findings.   Donut no where to be seen however the remaining piece of shift rod remains down in gear box...  ouch.  Any thoughts on path of least resistance?   The remaining rod was towards the front/set screw.  In my attempt to remove it shifted towards the back

My 417 shifter came out the donut stayed in transmission and had to be fished out with a strong flexible shaft magnet I got lucky and hooked it. Replaced with new complete shifter. I haven't seen one break like yours. Hopefully the bottom part of your shifter is still in place and can be retrieved, if still in gear it may be tricky. If you get it out you'll need a new shifter which should include a donut already attached.

Good luck

Found donut in there as well.    I was able to push and move does that guarantee that it’s not in gear?  It seems like that remaining rod now does not want to move/ was towards front

Before trying much more, I’d suggest the strong magnet as well, to get it up towards the top of the shifter hole.  For the broken shifter, it should come right out.  The donut, it might take a bit as it’s the same size as the hole.  I’d bend up a coat hanger to help with the retrieval along with the magnet.

You might want to get a telescoping magnet like this.  Get the "strongest" lb pickup magnet you can find.

https://www.amazon.com/SE-8036TM-NEW-Telescoping-Magnetic-Capacity/dp/B000RB3XBA/ref=pd_lpo_328_t_0/136-2571649-1513015?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B000RB3XBA&pd_rd_r=976578fd-3976-4011-b42a-10e0594d7640&pd_rd_w=SBxBq&pd_rd_wg=80k1K&pf_rd_p=7b36d496-f366-4631-94d3-61b87b52511b&pf_rd_r=40GBQMT5TX1RJD1WTY6R&psc=1&refRID=40GBQMT5TX1RJD1WTY6R

Also you might want to back out that dog point set screw so it doesn't catch the donut as you try to lift it out.

Thanks for all the excellent advise!  Got both pieces out / was able to locate a used shift rod for 20$ and back in business.   Now time to relax and have a home beer!

I hate to say this, because while enjoying a beer, questions should never be entered that require thought.  :orcs-cheers:

So, I'll wait.......................................................................  :greetings-wavingyellow:

You fished out the doughnut, and the end piece, but did you find the roll pin (part #53)???  :confusion-confused:

I may have an extra shifter rod if needed for postage only. I've had the same thing happen to me.

Stevasauras.  No I did not find that roll pin...   did not realize it was there.   Put it back together and all seems fine.  Can I do without?   If not I’ll order one

thx

I’m reading I guess I need that spiral roll pin in there to prevent the whole thing from dropping down in the tranny.   The set screw prevents that from happening.    Have to order that / need a new boot cover too

The 933168 roll pin for the shifter donut 5/32" x 13/16"

Replaced by 32121-114 spirol pin

The pin is installed from the rear. It is a bit short which allows the point on the set screw to share the same hole on the front.

3514 collar commonly called a donut

1239 dog-point set screw 1/4-20 x 3/4"
