clueless 3,012 #1 Posted August 13, 2020 My wife is retiring at the end of the year and I'm thinking about getting her a lawn ranger for her to haul her yard stuff around, mulch, dirt, leaves, plants and trimming. It need to be an electric start and preferably a kohler. Is the unidrive the same, and are they smaller than my 704? Now I live in Pensacola Fl. so there ain't gonna be none with in a 700 mile radius for sell so it's probably not going to happen, but what would one in good shape cost up in the land of plenty?
pfrederi 17,959 #2 Posted August 13, 2020 Any Ranger with a Kohler will be a modification. Physical size of the tranny is the same as other gear drives. 8" wheel make it sit lower. Love my L107 she is my chore tractor...so much easier getting on and off her vs her bigger brothers... 1

71_Bronco 1,072 #4 Posted August 13, 2020 I love the size of my Lawn Ranger. Haven't gotten to use it much as I just recently picked it up. They should have the same uni-drive as the bigger tractors of the era, but the wheels are a little unique. The older ones (62-65 I believe) had the wheels keyed directly to the shaft, and the later ones had 3-lug hubs, not the typical 5-lug. As others have said, I dont think they came stock with Kohler's, but I've read that the K181 (8hp) is a direct swap. May want to double-check that though as I've never done it myself, just read it was possible. Here's a pic of mine, it's the first generation with the tool-box, rear fenders and spring seat (rather than a seat-pan)

Yup, Wheel Horse supposedly changed them in '63 due to complaints about the hard, solid front wheels. I'm in the process of gathering new wheels & tires, and I went with pneumatic fronts. The other issue I had was the spindles. Those stock front wheels have steel bushings, no bearings. Ruined the spindles. Lincoln at A-Z Tractor happen to have a set (was super shocked). The new fronts will have bearings.
stevasaurus 22,902 #7 Posted August 13, 2020 Hi Chris...maybe talk to @Lane Ranger He lives in the Land of Rangers and he travels to Florida once in a while. I don't want to speak for him, but he may have some ideas and be able to help. BTW, I have a parsel of land down there, just east of Pennsacola that I need to trek down there and look at once in a while. Maybe, I can help also.

Mike, by the late 70's we had pretty much exercised Mr. Joe and his family from this part of the state, but then them damn yankees started moving down here with their old British sports cars in tow. In the early 70,s my uncle liked to mess about with British cars and cussed the Lucas's often. I remember him saying once, it"s a good thing that Lucas didn't have anything to do with that DB5 James drove. He also use to say a lot,put a clean piece cardboard under the front of that TR6 . Lane Ranger 11,008 #9 Posted August 13, 2020 Yes I try to go to Florida every year and may be able next year. I have had two Lawn Rangers in my stable. Both 1967's. I sold one to Denny Clarke several years ago and I just sold my favorite one two months ago for $750. It was a very nice Lawn Ranger. Both of mine had original type motors and both were electric start Tecumseh's. I took an 856 to Clay Brooks in Georgia last year on the way to Florida and also Lawn Sweeper to one Red Square member in Mobile, Alabama last year on the way to Rodney Burger;s in Lorida, Florida (and I took Rodney a 753 from West Virginia)! So I might be able to be a conduit for a Lawn Ranger ! 2
dclarke 4,035 #10 Posted August 13, 2020 (edited) This is the Ranger I got from Lane. I put a K161 pull start Kohler and an 8 speed in it a few years ago. Edited August 13, 2020 by dclarke 3
71_Bronco 1,072 #11 Posted August 13, 2020 Sweet ride @dclarke. Very nicely modified there with the floorboards and the second clutch pedal. Bet she's a blast to rip around on.
