Starter just clicks

Recommended Posts

Chuck14025

1994 520 H.   Starter just clicks.

1. Battery 12.6V, load test OK.,    New solenoid. Ground good. Key switch tested ok. Wiring diagram shows a 'kill' relay - I can't find it on the tractor. Checked the 3 relays under the battery box - they work. Neutral switch, PTP and seat switch work mechanically.

2. Not able to find article on this problem when searching. There must be dozens. How do I find them?

3. Can I test the starter without taking it out?

4. Is there a 'kill' relay?

thank you...

When the solenoid clicks you are not getting enought power. You say the battery is good so you are not getting ground. Check and clean all the grounds and make sure the switch is grounded.

I'll put a charger on the battery to get the volts up. Cleaned the main ground at the frame yesterday. I'll check the switch ground. Thanks.

Unless replaced at some point, that starter is 26 yrs old and quite likely needing refurbished or, at least, cleaned out and lubed.  Over the years (decades), micro dust accumulates and robs power; brushes get worn, bearings needlube replaced, etc.  If all grounds are good and battery is up, take the starter off and clean it up.

There is a kill relay. The relays are all identical so the only way to identify them is to compare the wire colors going to each of them. Each relay has normally open and normally closed contacts so can function differently to meet the requirement.

1994 520 H.   Starter just clicks. This is probably a bad battery cable or connection.

Checked the 3 relays under the battery box - they work. Neutral switch, PTP and seat switch work mechanically. The kill relay has nothing to do with the starter, it will only come into play when the key is turned off or the PTO is on and you get out of the seat.

2. Not able to find article on this problem when searching. There must be dozens. How do I find them?

3. Can I test the starter without taking it out? Take an automotive jumper cable set, put the black on battery "-"  and the starter bolt at the engine, Put the red cable on the starter post and the battery "+". This will bypass all wires on the tractor and if the starter won't turn over it is bad.

4. Is there a 'kill' relay?

thank you...

Thank you all for the excellent responses and finally I've learned what the 'kill' relay is all about.

Tested all 3 relays - they all behave the same.

NEW INFORMATION

1. Cleaned all wiring, etc. turned key engine, STARTED right up.

2. Shut it down, tried to RESTART - not even a click. TOTALLY DEAD.

3. 12.7 volts on the battery.

4. Connections tight. Solenoid works. Starter works.

5. HOT wire from battery + to starter solenoid where the Light Blue wire attaches - STARTS RIGHT UP.

QUESTION IS: Why isn't the Light Blue wire to the solenoid being energized? What are the possible scenarios?

1. Intermittent operation of the key switch?

2. An opening on the coil side of the electric circuit?

3. Other possibilities.

Thanks for the help.  Coffee and donuts are ready.

Sorry for the mistyping.  QUESTION IS: Why isn't the Light Blue wire to the solenoid NOT being energized? What are the possible scenarios?

There is a diagram here for just the starter circuit making it easier to follow

Thanks gwest. Now I have 3 different copies of the 'demystification' guide with 3 different wiring diagrams but yours at least shows the brown wire from the start switch going to the coil side. Perhaps something on that side that should be closing the circuit isn't.

I have a few basic electrical system diagrams that are helpful in understanding how the wiring system works. They are not specific to any particular tractor and do not include safety switches. All use the 5 post ignition switches 103-991 for Magneto and 103-990 for Battery Ignition. I failed to include fuses in the Starter Generator drawing, this is an over-site and I would encourage fuses be used as shown in the other two drawings.
      Hope this is helpful.
Magneto Ignition system with electric start and solenoid.

Battery powered ignition system with points, condenser, solenoid and electric start.

Battery powered ignition with solenoid, points, condenser, Starter Generator and a mechanical voltage regulator.

We have uncovered a shortcoming in the factory  wiring diagrams for S/G battery ignition systems with a four terminal voltage regulator. The wire from the regulator "Gen" terminal to the S/G  "A" terminal was omitted. This drawing should clear that up.
