Lagersolut 670 #1 Posted August 8, 2020 (edited) Gonna ask a silly question : After getting my 416-8 transmission back together earlier this year fixing a cracked cluster gear I realized forgot to put the cap back in the detent access hole . Not wanting to tear half the thing down I figured the frame plate would cover it and it wouldn't leak . I'm getting a few drops of oil on the floor and it's not leaking at any of the new seals ...was hoping it was high enough on the case and covered by the frame plate it wouldn't leak .....anyone else ever forget this ....?....opinions ? R. L. Addison 299 #3 Posted August 9, 2020 I have an 867 the plug was omitted on and presently have it split because of that very problem. Was rust proofing some bare metal and found the plate that bolts to transmission is cracked on both sides. Upon removal of frame, found one of the welded pin brackets for front axle pivots pushed back on one side pushed back due to a defective weld (no penetration). I bought this tractor for resale, figured a couple days work on tractor & a day on mower.....YUP, been several weeks now and it is presently in almost every piece it will come in. Every time I try to fix something, another raises its ugly head. Oh well, that's life. Having no plug, I think I'll just fill the hole with RTV or another sealer. The oil has to get past a shift rail to get to that hole, plus that hole is as high as it can go at the top of the case. Think about it...you have no seal where each of the shifters go, and if you look in the hole where the regular shifter goes you will see the shift forks. These are below the level of that access hole. That access hole also mounts tight to the transmission mounting plate. When I rebuild one, I just put a finger of fiber grease in that hole. Most members would use a dab of silicon caulk. I would not worry if you are getting a leak there. If your oil level is too high, I would care for that. Otherwise, time will put it's own plug there without hurting a thing. Question...you do have 90 wt in there, not 10w-30 or something like that?? It is worth your time to try to figure out where the leak is...but if it is that hole, I would not worry about it. I used what was left of a 85/140 bottle , the rest was 90w . The level was a hair over the full mark drained a little out today . Depending what the opinions were here I was going to just loosen the bolts ( frame plate ) enough to get a dab of silicone over it . Brake, input and axle seals are all dry - Starting to think the trans gasket didn't take for whatever reason . Leak is somewhere in the front it's wet around the front and frame mounting plate - why I was wondering if the detent hole could be the culprit . I'm not going to tear it all apart anymore this year for a trans gasket over few drops of oil - just keep my eye on it and run it . stevasaurus 22,863 #7 Posted August 10, 2020 Just thinking, those new bolts might be the culprit. I believe the bottom 2 bolts are blind holes, but the top 2 go through. (I always thought all 4 were blind holes, until I did my Brother's #5091. The top 2 were open). I just had this apart a few months ago had a thread here replaced the cluster gear . Just bought this 416-8 last September went over the entire unit ...here's a pic - just stepped up on these new Kenda tires for the hill we live on . Lagersolut 670 #9 Posted August 16, 2020 (edited) Taped up replaced one at a time - closer inspection ( pulled the input shaft pulley back away from case ) looks like it's really damp . Think I'm going order one and replace it - if it's not the problem now it will be later This dope tape made for oils and gasses .
