kthack657 279 #1 Posted August 7, 2020 (edited) hi all, trying to get my 417-A up and running...it ran when we parked it a few years ago due to a major oil leak, but got that fixed and now it doesn't have spark...new points, new condensor new plug and still no spark. Set the points gap too, still nothing. Checking the coil, but after that I am at a loss. The engine turns over and has good compression, just no spark... HELP!!! wallfish 16,963 #6 Posted August 7, 2020 The point's contacts come with a thin clear coating on them to keep from oxidizing in the package, be sure to clean that off Check all the wires for any chaffing of insulation because if it grounds out, no spark 12v+ power to the + side of the coil bypasses any and all safety switches and such Bad plug wire? kthack657 279 #7 Posted August 8, 2020 Thanks all, the points were cleaned, and we used a brand new condenser too...we didn't change out the spark plug wire but will try that in the morning...the other weird thing that happened after all of this was the ignition started to have issues where sometimes it would work and sometimes it wouldn't...traced wires and took care of one problem wire but all others looked good. Fuses looked good too... thanks all so far for your help, this tractor seems to have become a basket case, but we will whip it into shape!! Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

953 nut 54,979 #9 Posted August 8, 2020 Double check the points gap to be sure they are opening no more than 0.020" and closing completely. You can remove the condenser lead from the coil for testing, there should be spark at the points when they open and close without the condenser and the key in the run position (or a jumper from the battery). kthack657 279 #10 Posted August 12, 2020 Hi all, thank you for all of your advice, we got the spark figured out and after figuring out the spark issue, we went onto get the ignition to work and the coil is good. Was actually used to mow last night. It still needs some work to make it reliable, and a bath as it had an issue where it was spewing oil(simple fix and we had the part).
