If using a remote tank, wonder what would be the best rated electric fuel pump for the diesel? 4-7 psi?
Dan.gerous 2,696 #153 Posted June 11, 2022 Have just brought this L70 Managed to get an electric start one. It comes with Generator so might be able to mate the Robin DY23 to that and sell it. Also could use the trolley as my mobile welding station and just scrap the generator, or sell t for whatever I can get. Picking it up in Thursday in Edinburgh on the way home, hopefully it all goes smoothly as haven't had the greatest of luck in my quest for a diesel! 1
Dan.gerous 2,696 #154 Posted June 12, 2022 Woke up this morning thinking about what to do with generator unit and the obvious solution hit me. Engine into wheelhorse Generator trolley turned into my new welding trolley Generator attached to a quick hitch and mounted to front of wheelhorse! So obvious, and that would mean my welder could then be taken anywhere on the farm if put into the trailer behind the wheelhorse - the same machine that then provides power. Super excited now! 1 3
ebinmaine 67,556 #155 Posted June 12, 2022 Great line of thinking there Dan. Makes use of everything. Keeps all of it practical. Sooooooo..... Ya done yet??? 🤪

I love the idea but I fear there is one fly hovering over the ointment.... Most generators of the type you pictured have only one armature shaft bearing--at the end away from the engine. They rely on the engine's "PTO" side bearing at the other end (the tapered engine crankshaft end assuring perfect alignment with a cone end on the armature shaft). You'll have to wait and see how that one is set up to be sure. Fingers crossed it's a two-bearing genny. Edited June 12, 2022 by Handy Don 1

The 5hp might be compatible to the generator even if it couldn't produce 5kw - mate them together or something. I'm sure you guys will be quizzed mercilessly on options! I'm so bored this trip on the ship - tons to do at home but stuck twiddling thumbs here until Thursday. Have made a stupid project/present for one of the young trainees, he has just got a full-time job, and left home. But that's no substitute for working on the wheelhorses

I had a very strange idea that there may be some way to support the "taper" end of the generator. A "U" holding a cross-shaft on two bearings to give it stiffness--at one end, the taper shaft into the generator and at the other the pulley to the Horse. Not as efficient as a generator with build in, side-load capable bearings but you are an innovative fellow!

Certainly the prices can be crazy for a used engine, and half of them dont even look in good condition. Must have looked at every type of single cylinder engine ever invented! I really like the look of the Duetz air blower system, but the Yanmar seems the best fit for the hood.

Not as efficient as a generator with build in, side-load capable bearings but you are an innovative fellow! I did a quick search and there appear to be a few solutions to the single bearing issue. One guy just used the shaft and lower engine casing of a blown engine to act as the second bearing, then attached the belt to the crankshaft - I think he cut it short and machined the remainder to take a pully. I'm sure we can bodge something together, the project is all about improving mechanical knowledge so even a failure is a success!

The Lombardini was a lot cheaper and I do prefer the sound, it sounds like an old tractor. Dan.gerous 2,696 #167 Posted June 16, 2022 Picked up the Yanmar generator, pictures to follow as it's been a long, long, long day. 30 hours with only 2 1/2 hours sleep - last day at work always ends up being a test of endurance. Annoyingly I just found a diesel wheelhorse about 2 hours from me for less money than I just spent!!! I actually drove past it today on the way home. He said engine fine, but clutch issues......ahhhhhhh! It will be simple to fix I'm sure. Anyway, don't have any spare cash so going to cry myself to sleep tonight.

Ask Jeff if he will ask the treasurer if you can have a loan... I'm sure the answer would come back as 'expletive no'... but... maybe Jeff can work on her... @Jeff-C175 Don Edited June 16, 2022 by Snoopy11 2

Dan.gerous 2,696 #173 Posted June 17, 2022 (edited) Have quickly thrown the generator back up for sale, guy coming around to have a look tomorrow. Probably by the time it sells the 512d might be sold, but worth a try. He says clutch not working, not sure if that's PTO or gearbox clutch. Also hedging bets and put one of the C125's up, it's got a good side discharge deck so might go quick enough to get a deal done. Dan.gerous 2,696 #174 Posted June 17, 2022 Pictures of the generator. It's sounds beautiful when running, and incredibly quiet - not as loud as the Kohker 301 Key has been mangled by worker thugs, but you can use a screwdriver. Had biofuel and cooking oil in it, so a bit smoky when cold. Flush it all out and replace with fresh diesel if I don't sell it. At new house now, nowhere to work and it's pouring with rain. Need a garage ASAP

It was definitly louder then any of my kohler's. I mostly don't wear earmuffs, but when that engine ran, I immediately put them muffs on. Had the stock muffler and everything.
