Easy off oven cleaner works wonders to get off grease and grime, just power wash then dry it well. Scuff pad what you can get to then use a final wash before paint. Works for me.

Thanks @Racinbob for the tip. It is definitely getting torn apart i cant keep it in 3rd gear lol

You're welcome.  I'm afraid that you have a worn 3523 gear causing your problem. Quite a common problem. The input shaft/gear might be adding to the problem.  Keep us posted once you get her apart. :)

I think what Bob is saying here is he shims the input shaft inward if there is any slop to keep the input shaft firmly into the 3rd gear. I've never done this but not a bad Idea and @Achtohas a horse that pops out that he is going to fix some day and will look at this. His 3rd gear looked pretty decent when he had it apart.

Don't throw the old one out Dan makes dandy hitch pins out of them! Geez I shoulda posted that in repurpose Dan! :D

Excellent. Do this little check before you open it up. Put the transmission in 3rd gear and only let the shift rail detents hold it there (engine not running). See if there's any in/out play on the drive pulley. It should be zero. If there is any at all measure it the best you can. When you reassemble it you need to put an arbor shim in that thickness on the input shaft behind the gear before you slip in into the case. :)

I was typing as you posted Jim. Very true. Any in/out play is how much the two gears are separating as you're using it. If it's popping out of gear the shim itself probably won't cure it but it will help save the new 3523. The new gear itself won't eliminate the play. :)

Maybe the forks have a bit of play?

When you assemble it you can double check the adjustment on the dog point screw.

Is that the one that holds the shifter in the hole?
