Gordyhogg 150 #1 Posted August 4, 2020 (edited) hey guys im repainting the "horse of a different color" need an opinion. Its originally a 656 with a 6 horse tecumseh in it but i dropped in an 8hp kohler k181 with electric start. Would you guys keep it original and put the 656 decals on it or would you put 856 decals on it since its an 8 horse now? ebinmaine 67,274 #2 Posted August 4, 2020 I'd mix it up a little bit and do both, kind of. Have Terry the vinyl guy make you up some stickers that have a forward or back slash through the original 6 and put an 8 beside it. 2
WHNJ701 4,165 #3 Posted August 4, 2020 (edited) the 854 I rebuilt from pieces of numerous other tractors has a pullstart 7hp kohler. I used 854 decals since it still has the serial number for the 854 you don't have a rare numbers matching shelby mustang so do what you like! SylvanLakeWH 25,490 #4 Posted August 4, 2020 Maybe have @Vinylguy set you up with a custom "6/856" decal set... 1
WHX?? 48,779 #5 Posted August 4, 2020 856 gets my vote Gordy just to confuse us which doesn't take much these days .. you get the rest in RED that's gonna be one sharp tractor! Living proof there EB ..the wrong color does come off! 4 minutes ago, ebinmaine said: forward or back slash through the original 6 and put an 8 beside it. Actually that's not a bad Idea EB 6856... 1
D_Mac 8,593 #6 Posted August 4, 2020 (edited) I have a Simplicity 727 That someone replaced the 7hp to an 8hp, I still call it my 727 and it still has 727 badging and not 728. When I pull up to a red light and the guy next to me thinks its only a 7hp and I blow by him, thats when they know it was an 8 !!! Its a " sleeper " Edited August 4, 2020 by D_Mac 1
rjg854 11,350 #7 Posted August 4, 2020 I'd badge it for what it is, now, 856. Of course that's just me. I wouldn't want to confuse people about what it is

Redneckdavis 308 #9 Posted August 4, 2020 Well since you already destroyed a piece of history, you might as well just badge it JD or Cub. . Hahahahahahahaha you know some purest is thinking it. But Just kidding . I'd probably keep the 656. But I'm the guy who took the original green vinyl out of my 78 Ford, I could not find a replacement so I went back with carpet and made.sure to put a few cut OE peices underneath. Just in case I redid or someone else got it, they would know what it was meant to have.
Pullstart 62,790 #10 Posted August 4, 2020 My 502 has an air compressor engine, ‘64 frame, ‘78 transmission and rear wheels, etc. it’s still a ‘62 if you ask me...
Racinbob 11,044 #11 Posted August 4, 2020 Nice upgrade! Many years ago I converted my 1976 B-80 that I bought new to a C-160. I immediately removed the B-80 decals on the steering tower and that's the way it is still today. I always figured to have Terry make up replacements designated B-160 but never got around to it. I figured it would be fun to raise some eyebrows. I'm with Eric on coming up with something different just for the fun of it. 2

In 76 and 77 all the vitals of the B's were identical to the C series (save for the HP). I went s far as changing the minor differences. Swapped the 22.750 rears to 23.850, added headlights and swapped the seat to a high back. The other difference was the B's had a 13" steering wheel and the C's were 15". I left that as is because I like the smaller wheel. The 4 speeds were 74 and 75 and there were no hydro B's any year. Gordyhogg 150 #21 Posted August 4, 2020 I love the way you guys think outside the box 🤣🤣🤣 im really thinking about just going with 856 to keep it simple. But, time will tell. Any pointers on painting the frame/transmission? I really dont want to have to poly disc this whole tractor down to bare metal haha i just wanted to do it to the tins since theyre the first thing you see. Still gonna be a working tractor but it has to be red again
Racinbob 11,044 #22 Posted August 4, 2020 I have always torn them down and painted each part separately because I always open up the tranny for inspection and if I have it that far apart I figured I might as well go all the way. I would definitely consider leaving some things still assembled on the next one. Give it a good pressure washing and degrease with whatever you like (I use Simple Green undiluted) and hit it again with the pressure washer. I think you'll like the results.
Redneckdavis 308 #23 Posted August 4, 2020 Simple green, a tire brush and pressure washer. How much loose paint or crud? How good is your pressure washer? The more pressure the better, but there is an attachment for sandblasting. You can buy for about$30 on Amazon or eBay. Fits where standard tip does, and has hose ran to a spike you put in your bucket of sand. I use standard $5/50# bag play box sand. I got mine a few months ago and have been using it. Worked pretty well. Kinda 2 in one, you were gnna wash it anyway.
Gordyhogg 150 #24 Posted August 4, 2020 Thanks @Racinbob for the tip. It is definitely getting torn apart i cant keep it in 3rd gear lol
