troutbum70 857 #1 Posted August 3, 2020 Here is a picture of what we would think is made from balsa wood. This and 8 pieces of lead shaped the same as this piece of wood was found in an old shed by a fellow parishioner, now the lead does have a flat piece of metal out each end with one end having the metal without curved at the end like it was meant to hook on to something. Any thoughts?

And there is 9 of the lead and also all we could think of was a plum bob or because there is few of them a counter weight for some thing. The people that had lived on the property from around the turn of the century were farmers.

Darb1964 1,042 #11 Posted August 4, 2020 Counter weight for an animal cage door, let them out during the day, close them in at night. Without going in the cage.

Stormin 9,981 #13 Posted August 4, 2020 How about weights to hold down netting over a hay stack or similar? Or to hold down a fishing net?

Maybe attached around the edges of a fishing net to keep it spread out when thrown into the lake or river ? Or, if they were farmers, 🚜, and any farmers that I know, are a bit “careful” when it comes to spending the hard earned, 👛. Perhaps they were homemade ‘earrings’ for his wife. 🧖♀️.

When I was a kid we would spread a weighted net at the end of our pond and attract fish with some ground up breakfast cereal. Once we had several good size fish over the net we would haule it in and throw back the smaller fish. Don't remember ever making our own weights but they were nothing fancy. troutbum70 857 #19 Posted August 5, 2020 It is possible that is what they were used for, but we keep thinking they had to serve a greater purpose.
