They were worn out from 100 years of cotton farming before my day bought the place in 1948. for several years he planted peanuts , made a crop of peanut hay, and let them regrow and plowed them under. peanuts are in the legume family and take nitrogen from the air, so the plant puts nitrogen back into the soil.
