48" deck on 314-8 good to go?

Recommended Posts

Hi- been away for a while, other hobbies, life etc. got in front.  Still using my Wheel Horse tractors though.  My 416-H needs some TLC, and was wondering if the 48" deck it wears is too much for my 314-8, which has no deck at the moment.  I keep the blades sharp, and try to cut once a week at most.  Responses from those who have tried this combo will be much appreciated!

TIA, Rick

Don't have a 48", but I've used a 42" on a 10hp with no problems...

Thanks, guys!  The 314-8 came with a rusted out 42"SD, I've been using it for a blade tractor and trailer puller, it's time it earned it's keep!

Have a 48" on a 1968 Raider 12.. no problem at all. Might be different with a hydro..

Stepney, I remember reading somewhere that it takes 2 hp to work the hydro.  This deck came to me on a 416-H, it had no problems driving the 48" deck with the hydro.  I am confident now it will work with the 14 hp Kohler 8 speed tractor.

Thanks, Rick

My 1998 314-8 had a 48 inch deck on it and I had no problems.  It was originally bought that way from the dealer.

Thanks for all the responses, guys!  I'm going to make the switch to the 314-8 and forge ahead.  The 416-H needs some down time for maintenance, valve adjustment, leaky tires and such.

Thanks again, Rick

depends on a number of things - primarily the hydro unit

even the viscosity of the trans fluid can make a difference in the efficiency

2 hp might be in the ball park for an approp sized hydro trans for 16 hp engine - would be around 12.5 % or so ...  ? ...

compared to a manual trans that might be around 5 % or so -   .8 hp or so ... ? ...

how many hours on the 416-H ?

I have one 416-H with around 1000 hours and (unfortunately) has not had valve adjustment performed

still runs great and uses very little oil - but prefer to have valve adjustment done and checked for possible valve seat issue

concerned about getting into it and snapping studs or similar

tom2p, the Onan hour meter shows 968.1 hours.  To the best of my recollection it had 7xx hours on it when I bought it.  I have had the necessary gaskets for over a year now.  After a new right hip, retirement, and a spinal laminectomy to release compression on sciatic nerves I feel like working on it again! Now, if this heat and/or humidity would lighten up, I'd be good to go...

btw, the 314-8 shows 531 hours
