Aftermarket carburetors

I recently sent a Kohler 4705362 carburetor to Bill Miller for rebuild.  My mistake, now I need a carb for my 310-8 M10. 

Looking at a Kohler #26 replacement carb from Isavetractors for $60.  Don't want to go the Chinese route and Kohler carbs are out of sight.   

Any feedback on carbs from Isavetractors would be appreciated.  He says they are made in the USA.

No knowledge of his carbs guy but I have pretty good luck with the China knock offs. After all this is a hobby for some of us so we have to cut corners to be able to buy more tractors.

We do appreciate you wanting to stay American tho.

I bought 2  Chinese carbs, one for my C-160 and it was junk.  Nothing changed no matter how you adjusted the needles.  The one for a 8hp kohler worked fair. 

I now do my best to find used kohler carbs and rebuild them and bush the throttle when needed.

I've had dozens come to me for repair work after actual shops gave up.. 99% of the time they may or may not run semi OK but .. not well. The rest of the time it simply won't run at all.

Funny Mr. Miller's name has come up so much recently..

If another member doesnt have one around, I'll check my horde, may have a rebuildable one I'd be willing to rebuild and bush, test out on an engine, and send your way if you were game. Done that a time or two in the antique sled world.

This is the experience I have had as well.

 

Not familiar with isavetractors' carbs but I'll ALWAYS find a used Kohler carb and rebuild it.

I do remember reading threads of

some members here using 

isavetractors carbs with no complaints.

l myself have not used normans carbs 

but wouldnt hesitate. I would steer clear 

of the Chinese carbs. The inlet fittings are 

metric threads and the old ones wont 

fit the new one.

I bought a #16 carb from Norm at IST a couple of years ago, worked fine. I think Norman is a straight up guy I would double check about the carbs being made in the USA . Hard to believe that their building replacement carbs that cheap, a few years ago DeWalt had a American flag on some of their small hand tool boxes and bags under it in small print it read assembled in the USA.

My experience with replacement carbs in general hasn't been good.  Year before last the engine on our push mower started surging.  I removed the carb, cleaned it, put it back together and it was fine all year.  Last year it wouldn't work right at all.  The needle and seat wouldn't seal, so it just dumped gas through the engine as fast as it could.  Went to buy a needle and seat at the dealer and it was $75, but a whole new carb was only $30.  Bought the carb.  It worked great all last season.  This season it has not run correctly all year.  In the spring when it was cooler it was hard to start after 15 or so years of starting on the first pull and surged badly just like it did last year.  And this one can't even be adjusted in any meaningful way.  Thinking about taking the needle and seat of of the new carb and putting it in the old one.

Does anyone make an adapter to put a Holley on a lawn mower engine?

I save tractor carbs are not made in USA.  i bought one for a K341 never could get it to run right.  Have had mixed success/failure with much cheaper Chinese carbs.

Best way to do it is to buy online but pick the person or business that has the best feedback. I have bought many knock offs and had great success. But saying that isavetractors has a great reputation. I also believe they dial them in for you most of the time you can just slap the carb on and go. Isavetractors seem to be of a better quality. Even the chinese can make some good stuff. It depends on what you want to spend.

I haven't run across a Kohler carb yet that couldn't be repaired with a bushing and carb kit.

I agree 99% of the time i rebuild them myself. could do it blind folded. LOL

Well. All this makes me glad I had guy throw in a box with 3 OE carbs to go with my k341. I was thinking faster would be $20 Chinese carb but looks like carb kit on and original is the best route

Thanks guys for the feedback on aftermarket carbs and clarifying that the Isavetractors carbs are not made in the USA.  I have decided to go with used OEM carbs (Kohler, Walbro, Carter) and may have found one.  For future reference, used OEM carbs would be a quick sell item here or on ebay I think.  I didn't see any advertised.

 I've bought a couple from Lincoln at A to Z tractor in PA. 

That's one of our own vendors.

The positive thing about the china carbs is that it cut the price on used kohler carbs. The price got kinda stupid for awhile and I'm sure that was part of the reason they starting making the china carbs. 

 

I just have one and it is on my 1277 right now and running great, but I have a box a used carbs I need to rebuild some winter and then they will go back in rotation.

I bought an isavetractors carb and had to modify mine a bit to make the air filter fit. The governor was too long, for the Magnum 12 that it was going on.  The mounting bolt is much tighter, and requires a narrow wrench to attach.  not the same casting as the original.  It does not run any worse or better than before, but I think my motor is also due for a rebuild.  Norman was very responsive on emails and support.  The import carb pictures all look the same, so I would guess they are from the same factory and would doubt they are rebuildable due to parts support.
