Dip Stick Question

Recommended Posts

I found this notch in the dip stick on my Raider 10.       I do see and feel the axle that appears to cover about 1/3 of the oil fill hole.

Anyone ever seen this notch ?

Ed, I am pretty sure the dipstick on my Raider 10 has a flattened spot with cross hatching...  Maybe a different vendor used that notch to indicate the upper and lower levels?  Danny

Mine has the cross hatching, but it is below the notch that appears to have been machined in by rubbing on the turning  axle.

Have you checked the stick for straightness? If it's bent, it'll likely slide back into the spot it "likes".

Not even sure if that makes sense.

It appears to be straight.    The odd thing is, this is a a tapered pipe plug that could not be in the exact position every time it is screwed in, but there isn't any wear marks other than at the notch.

I just looked at your 1st pic again, it looks like the stick is bent in relation to the plug. In the direction of the wear point.

Maybe it's just an optical illusion from the pic?

You could be correct. Tomorrow, I'll screw the plug into a coupling and nipple to see if it is bent.

OK, @echris,  you nailed it.      The stick was bent in the direction of the notch where it all most rubbed thru on the axle.    Glad I found it before the bottom piece broke off and lodged in a gear.    Now to drain and flush out the metal dust.

The stick was ground about 2/3rds thru.

Ed, I have never seen a dip stick in the fill hole on a Wheel Horse transmission.  Everything you have said about that thing leads me to think that somebody stole that out of and engine and put it in the fill hole.  It certainly looks like an engine dip stick.  I would throw that out and get the right plug.  The correct fill level for any of these transmissions is for the oil to start running out of the fill plug hole...why would you need a dip stick in there.??  You're lucky that it has not caused any damage.  :orcs-cheers:
