Return of the Raider 12

Recommended Posts

All pics are from today. This is the 2nd Wheel Horse I inherited from my grandfather. A '72 Raider 12. Not the prettiest, but it's back to work. I mowed with this one at my house about a decade ago and it worked well. Now it's spinning like a top.

Work done:

  • Oil pan gasket;
  • New ignition system:
    • Dave Kirk Transducer Ignition (2nd one I've installed, all good) and yellow plug wire;
    • iSavetractors new coil and points;
    • New ignition switch.
  • fixed/cleaned/lubed/patched wiring;
  • cleaned up regulator/rectifier;
  • Facet 1077 solid state electronic fuel pump;
  • Replaced head and head gasket;
  • New Champion plug;
  • Valvoline VR1 racing oil 10w-30;
  • Fresh 80w-90 tranny fluid.
  • General (not thorough) grime cleaning. Added Gibbs oil to all bolts I unscrewed.

QUESTION: Which model mower decks work for this model? I had an old beat up one that I'd like to replace.

Cheers.

This folder has a D&A file in it.

The A is the attachment list showing what was available in 1972. Do a search of our files using the model number of the deck you want. When the search results come up look for one with DNA in the title. It will list all the decks of that size and type in the order they were produced. Any deck following your 1972 choice should fit.

The D&A attachment list has the original deck, the deck that replaced the original and the deck available when the list was made. This often results in missed models. The DNA list includes the missing ones and the reason it was created.

Let us know if you need help with it.

Nice looking ride.

Great job bringing it back to service.

Looks like you have a front tach-a-matic. In short, any deck from about 1966-2007 will fit on there just fine. 36-42-48" rear or side discharge, long as it's tach-a-matic.
Going back to a 1972 side-drive deck would be a bit of a step back IMHO.

That sheet metal is begging for some attention. I would rub it all down with some boiled linseed oil and see what you got there. Then I would rub it all down again !

I know Mac -- I'll get on it. One thing at a time, garage needs cleaning now. I use Gibbs oil. BLO I use for wood....

Edit: Ok, Mac, better?
