matt monte 213 #1 Posted July 23, 2020 hello all, great site! Id like to start off saying i know zero about lawn/garden tractors yet looking forward to learning. My passion up until now has been classic cars and harleys. i got away using a push mower on a small parcel, (60x100). However im moving and the new house will have a acre of property so im done with the push mower scene. Searching around for a decent second hand lawn tractor, i was drawn in to the 80's style wheel horse. Sadly there are very few for sale in my price range on long island ny. As luck would have it there is one for sale in the town im moving to in southern jersey. Although its not the model/year i have been searching for, its still a wheel horse. Model#72042 ser#5900439. A little internet research tells me its a 264-6, from 1995. Thats all i really could figure out. I suppose what im asking is attachments such as mower deck and plow blades the same on all wheel horses? I watch a few Youtube videos and i liked the ease of how things install/come off. At this point i wanna get into the house and paint, etc. and not be tinkering with a tractor, at least for the time being. Im pretty handy and dont mind doing tune ups, etc. The gentlemen is asking $550 for the one i saw for sale online and will be going over to check it out. Anything i should be looking for? Down the road i would love to restore one.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,253 #2 Posted July 23, 2020 Welcome to the forum. If it works it sounds like a decent deal. Here are some manuals for it. Click on the fuzzy picture. The D&A is tractor details and the A is the attachment list. Mower decks are sized by their width of cut. Garry

ebinmaine 70,812 #4 Posted July 23, 2020 I'm not much of an expert on the 80s or 90s vintage horses. All of the ones in our herd at home are older. From what I understand the 200 series such as that 264 is what would be considered a lighter duty lawn tractor. The 300, 400, 500 series are a heavier duty garden tractor. There's nothing inherently wrong about using a lawn tractor instead of a garden tractor as long as you understand the limitations and that you buy it knowing the purpose it was built for. Mowing and very light towing. You can also plow smaller or lighter amounts of snow with them. if you want to get into something that is a little more heavy duty and the implements have more cross-compatibility you should be looking for a 300 or 400 series. you'll get a more heavy-duty transmission and implements and be able to use it in the future for ground engagement work such as rototilling. You're in a good area to be shopping for horses. They're far less expensive down around Pennsylvania and New Jersey then they are up here in the further Northeast. You may want to throw a want ad in our own classifieds and just keep an eye out for a week or two... 1
matt monte 213 #5 Posted July 26, 2020 im proud owner of my 1st lawn tractor. Never needed one. I do now. Im starting to grasp what the limits of this machine are. Basically i need it to mow and possibly plow driveway. It runs rather well. The mower deck is a little rusty but everything seems to work. thanks for all the feedback, im really liking this site. After years of wrenching on my 57 chevy and harley, its nice to have something else with an engine to mess with. Maybe ill media blast deck and repaint, idk. I didnt even get into new house yet but bought this in preparation. 1
ebinmaine 70,812 #6 Posted July 26, 2020 Do a search on this site for baseline or baselining and you'll see what others do to every machine that is new to them. Basic tune and maintenance that POs likely didn't.
Armadyllo 12 #7 Posted February 18, 2024 (edited) A few years ago I've owned one of these 264-6, which I've restored and went a bit crazy with the colours . The transmission is a Peerless 820... one of the most wanted transmission for transforming these into an off-road little tractor or a racing one.
