Felix 145 #1 Posted July 22, 2020 Hi. I’m needing a gear shift gator for a manual 4 speed transmission. im in the uk. is there an alternative to a genuine part? The original one is perished and split and I’m guessing that why the transmission oil is full of water😬 any help appreciated.
Achto 27,761 #2 Posted July 22, 2020 (edited) Lowell sells them, not sure if he ships internationally. https://www.wheelhorsepartsandmore.com/transmissions.html#!/Wheel-horse-3577-shifter-boot/p/84932555/category=23548039 Edited July 22, 2020 by Achto

WHX?? 49,159 #4 Posted July 22, 2020 (edited) I ordered a bunch of them off fleabay for a great deal on a quantity not looking at the seller. Here it turned out Lowell was the seller! That said they are on there if @wheelhorseman doesn't ship international. https://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-TORO-WHEEL-HORSE-SHIFTER-BOOT-PART-3577/324229711971?epid=941793947&hash=item4b7d98c863:g:lZMAAOSwCGVYBWty Edited July 22, 2020 by WHX24
Lane Ranger 10,992 #5 Posted July 22, 2020 This is one item I made several replacement boots out of tennis balls! They are thicker and can be cut with a hack saw on bottom and drilled through on top for shifter! These will last longer than the Wheel Horse boot! 2

Just one question - where did you find Regal Red or black tennis balls?

Or it does take quite a bit of paint to fill in the tennis ball fuzz! 1 1

Is it a tight fit on the gearbox or would it need a jubilee clip to secure it?
Lane Ranger 10,992 #10 Posted July 22, 2020 (edited) The size of the top cut determines how tight the rest of the ball fits over the shifter and the transmission . No clips should be needed! Edited July 22, 2020 by Lane Ranger
peter lena 8,721 #11 Posted July 22, 2020 FELIX, your stating of water in the transmission , makes me say do a couple of lighter oil flushes on that gear box , with the front end raised for better drainage. i like ATF FLUID , or kerosene , and a thorough use of all the gears and hi/lo ranges . picture what you are trying to do , getting rid of water in those bearings and sliders , more detail will make it shift like new . regular gear oil would be 75-90 wt or 75- 140 wt . let us know how you make out , pete
Lane Ranger 10,992 #12 Posted July 22, 2020 Ok I found some pics from 2019 (last time I made one of the tennis ball boots for a Wheel Horse shifter on the transmission). This may give you a better idea how to make one of these tennis ball boots for your tractor! 2
roadapples 6,983 #13 Posted July 22, 2020 Good idea Lane, but wouldn't it be better to drill the top hole for a tighter fit on the rod...
Lane Ranger 10,992 #14 Posted July 22, 2020 I usually do with a wood bit but this was a quick job on a Work tractor. You do have to cut bottom out first before drilling!
WHX?? 49,159 #15 Posted July 22, 2020 I dunno Lane ...takes al lot of balls to take a tractor out dressed like that! 1
