Transmission oil fill tube and dipstick

Recommended Posts

LAWRENCE JEWETT

I recently purchased a 1988 516H and found that it is missing the transmission oil fill tube and dipstick, part numbers 38 and 39. The fill tube is still available from Toro, but the dipstick is discontinued. I have checked Ebay and cannot find one, other than with a complete transmission. Any sources out there?  Are there any substitutes for the dipstick or crosses to another model?  I know that the 516H and 518H are the same.  Thanks.

Took me a few seconds to find a number of them on eBay.

Parts numbers from Parts Tree are the same for 516,518,520, 416 hydro dipsticks and tubes..Knowing that as lynnmor said, they are plentiful on E-bay.Fill tube is still available from Parts Tree for around $43.00 plus shipping

I would also check with A to Z tractors in the vendor section...

From what I see on the Toro site, the part number for the tube is the same for a 520 and a 516. But, the part number for the dipsticks are different. 520H is 110768 and 516H is 106446. Are they interchangeable?  Same length and indexing?  If so, that would be easy for me.

Parts tree list the 516h dipstick as 110768 same as 520. They also state that the 106446 is NLA.I don't know if the two are the same length. The 516h was an 88 model only machine so a direct search ofor that model on E-bay may not give you any results but the 312h made from 90 to 92 also used the Eaton 700 transaxles so they might be more from those models available.

What is the model number of the 312H so I can do a search on the Toro site?  Do you folks use Partstree more than the Toro site?

So it appears from the parts lists that the 312h, 416h and 520h are all the same regardless of the unique dipstick number on the 516H. Same transmissions?

Absolutely not.The 516h,518h and 312h used the Eaton 700 series transaxle. The 520h and the 416h  series used the Eaton 1100  transaxle. The 700 series is considered by many a mowing transaxle only and has no oil filter. The 1100 series is an upgrade to the 700 and has an oil filter. The Eaton 700 transaxle was at best only used for roughly 3 years by Wheel Horse and was relegated to lower horsepower units towards the end of supply. You may want to consider why the 516h was a one year model, and the 518h only 2 years. The 12 horse 300 series only used this trans for 3 years and that is the end.

If I'm not mistaken,  the 312H and the 312A used different transmissions.

312H had an Eaton 1100 while the 312A used the Eaton 700.

Two completely different trannys.

Now I am getting confused. Don't you mean transmission instead of transaxles? Both the Toro site and Parts Tree show identical transaxle diagrams for the 516H and 520H. The diagrams do show different transmissions.  And my 520H and new 516H have identical transaxles. It appears from all of the parts diagrams and the actual transaxles that the dipstick assemblies are interchangeable.
