Pulling Apart Mule Drive 314-8

I took off the outboard flat idler and spacers.  Went for the V-idler, it wouldn't budge.  Am I on my way to go get a wheel puller to remove this inner V-idler?  It looks like a simple pull, or is there some other trick?  Bearing making some clicking noises, it's gotta go.  Thanks in advance.  It's already soaked to the 9's with AeroKroil.  Play with it tomorrow.

Not necessarily...

 

I'm sure others will have ideas, but I do remember posting something a long time ago about a similar problem with one of my mule drives, I'll check my notes and get back to you soon.

Here we go, an entertaining and informative little thread from 2012.  My solution is post #7:

 

 

Definitely clean up the shaft with some emery cloth or sandpaper and use some anti-seize when you install the new pulleys, it will make your life a lot easier the next time you have to replace one.

I have a 3/8 thick steel workbench top...cut a 1" slot in it expressly for removing the Mule Pulleys.

1) Loosen nut to be flush with end of pulley shaft. 

2) Slide shaft into this 1" wide slot.

3) Beat the hell out of the shaft nut until the pulleys break free.  

4) Hasn't failed me yet...and haven't ruined any pulley shafts either.

Fixed.  I got the inner bearing off.  Wheel puller absolutely useless.  Getting that pulley off was a tussle.  But I did something with my vice like DaveOMan does with his workbench.  A 14" ball pein hammer and develops some pretty good mass at removing parts.  What did they say in the Navy?  Get a bigger hammer.  I am very appreciative of the tips I got from people on fixing it.
