71_Bronco 1,072 #1 Posted July 17, 2020 (edited) Just picked up a '62 Lawn Ranger, and according to the Uni-Drive manual, that transmission is a 5025. Nowhere in the Unidrive manual does it mention / detail the 5025. It says to refer to Section II, but there is nothing in there about the 5025. I do have a complete manual on its way for this tractor, so hopefully there is some info there about it. Luckily, this one seems to shift and roll okay. Have not put any power to it yet though. Shouldn't have to split this one hopefully. Has anybody been in this transmission before? What does the 5025 have for a differential? Thanks! Edit: Just saw the note in the description section saying that the 5053 area covers the 5025, and that it has a spur gear differential Is there any differences in the 5053 and the 5025? Or just the lack of hubs for the direct-mount Lawn Ranger wheels? Edited July 17, 2020 by 71_Bronco
WHX?? 49,158 #2 Posted July 17, 2020 A 5025 will have a standard 4 pinion differential. Trans 3spd 5025 (1).pdf
stevasaurus 22,863 #3 Posted July 17, 2020 There is about 4 or 5 transmissions listed in the Section II of that manual. Each one will have a subtle difference. I believe the difference between the #5025 and the #5053 is the shift rails. The #5025 has the shift rails that are round...they had a suction tendency which would put the trans into 2 gears at once. The #5053 tried to solve this issue by grinding a flat side along the length of the rail. Notice the parts list works for all the transmissions listed between the 5025 & 5053. I have read about the sticky shift rails in other threads. Would it be a good idea to swap in my 5053 that I pulled out of my commando 8? Would look exactly the same and function the same. Or I could pull apart my 5025 and just modify/ swap the rails.
stevasaurus 22,863 #5 Posted July 18, 2020 You have 3 options... 1. use the 5025 and make sure you come to a complete stop before shifting transmission. The suction happens when shifting real fast between like 2nd and reverse or vise versa. 2. open both transmissions and swap the rails and forks. 3. Use the 5053, but take a look to make sure the commando did not have longer axles. Actually, there is a 4th option...open the 5025 and grind a flat along the length of the existing shift rails. round ones flat ones
71_Bronco 1,072 #6 Posted July 18, 2020 Thanks, I kinda figured that was my options. I think I'm going to swap the 5053 in, because I know it's a good trans, and it has the hubs. I am going to convert it to 8 x 3.75" wheels with the 5 lug, and run duals on it. Should look sharp with that set-up.
