Mower Deck Help

Hi All,

 

My neighbor gave me his Raider 10 with the Tecumseh HH100 engine about a month ago when he said it wouldn't start anymore. After a valve adjustment and a couple tanks of gas with seafoam, the Horse runs great! I originally wanted it to accompany my Poulan Pro as a true garden tractor so I bought a Plow and cart and removed the mower deck.

 

As a young engineer, I can't get over how well these are built, so I'll be picking up my second horse (C-120) this weekend, selling my Poulan, and the Raider 10 will be on mowing duty. I heard once that these machines are herd animals and it couldn't be more true!

Although I mowed with it twice (and it did better than my Poulan and a John Deere), I realized after removing the deck that it would need some help before putting it to regular use.

 

When I look for blades, I cannot find ones that have a double "D" hole like mine. I was hoping someone could tell me what part number I am looking for to get high lift blades. They appear to be about 13-7/8 inches long, but with how badly they are worn, I am not sure if that size is right or not.

 

My second issue is a missing grease fitting on the center mandrel. The outer two have tubes that move the grease fitting to be accessible from the top of the deck. Is this a common item I can pick up from the hardware store, or is there a special part number as well?

 

I wish I had some information about the mower deck, but the identification stickers are all white at this point. Here are some pics of the deck.

If this is a 42" side discharge model these are the decks that use the blades with the 5/8" x 3/4" double-D center hole

1966-1967 model RL-426 replaced by

1968 model 5-1421

1969 model 5-1422

1970 model 5-1423

1977 model 75-42MS01 - These 42" side discharge decks all use blades with 5/8" x 3/4" double-D center hole unless the spindles have been upgraded (Do not have operator manual)

 

Here is the ipl for the 5-1423. Click on the fuzzy picture to see the blades used. These blades are next to impossible to find. Part number 6693 blade replaced by 100200 3-blade kit.

I found a seller on ebay with a set of blades for $30...there was a review saying they were good blades and not stamped pieces of junk. We'll see what I get next week!

 

Looking at the manual, the grease fitting seems like something I should be able to grab at my local hardware store. I'll check it out and see what I can find.

 

As requested, here are some pictures of the Horse when I received it.

 

 

This is after I removed the deck and replaced it with the plow. I left the pulleys bolted onto the frame. It is a very close fit to the plow frame!

 

I'll have pictures of the new tractor this weekend. I was planning on filling the tires of this one with rv antifreeze, but with it relegated to lawn duty I don't think i'll have to bother.

I remember looking for similar when I was restoring an older deck.  I never found the double D's but I did find some with a full round hole and the two side holes.  they worked fine.  Unfortunately, I don't remember where I found them,  Maybe Du Cuts Power Equipment - on line

  Like Don says, the two roll pins will drive the blades and is actually safer if a blade contacts a solid object.

 

To determine the proper blade length,  measure the center to side spindle distance  on both sides.  Use the shortest length and subtract  1/4" for clearance as the blades pass.

To measure CL to CL , it is easier to measure the side of the shafts.  Just be sure to measure on the same side of both shafts.

Figured I would report back on how this turned out.

 

Blades came in from Ebay...They seem to be of good construction. We will see about durability in the weeks to come.

 

The center grease fitting was a 1" pipe nipple that broke off right at the spindle housing. Had to disassemble everything to get the spindle into a vice and work the pipe out. Did not replace the nipple and elbow, just put a 1/8NPT straight zerk fitting in a filled it with grease. Good news is the spindle actually had grease still in it despite not having a way to add more. Lucky, I guess, because parts seem hard to come by for the old decks.

 

While the pulley cover was off, I took the time to clean everything out and change the main drive belt (the one from PTO to deck). Looks a little odd being blue, but it's all TSC had when I walked in. I had a heck of a time getting the belt on...I loosened the tension pulley to the end of its travel and it was still a hassle. Anybody know if there is a trick i'm missing?

 

By the time I got everything put back together it was dark, so I did one test cut from the garage down to the wheel horse stable. Came out this morning to check it out and everything looked good.

Did you loosen both the tensioner lock bolt and the tensioner screw.     It's difficult to see, but the belt should be on the inside(largest) PTO pulley.

To install the belt, it may be easier to remove the small fixed  idler vee pulley then install it last with the belt in it's groove.
