Transmission assist

Hi folks;

 

You helped me tremendously years ago.  I have a 1976 C-120 with the Kohler K301 engine.

To begin, I'm dumb.

I've never done anything with the transmission and just drained it.  The fluid looked awful.

Is there a filter in there somewhere? I'm assuming there is but I don't want to dig in until I have some idea of what to do.  I can take stuff apart and put it back together but I'm not sure what to do next.

What type of fluid should I use once I get to the proper time to do it.

Manual. 8 speed, High and low setting with 3 forward and 1 reverse.

No filter there. But you can drain it down, and jack the front end up, there is a hump in the transmission casting that will hold some oil. After that, you could fill it with diesel fuel and idle around for a short time, flush, then fill with oil and flush, repeat that until it looks good and clean..

Those are tough gearboxes. You'd be hard pressed to hurt it unless it was run dry.

You might need a new shiftier boot if water has gotten in the transmission. Wheelhorse Parts and More down in the venders section sells them.

If the old oil looks like a chocolate milkshake, you likely have water in there (very likely)... a new shifter boot will correct that issue...

You want to use 90wt oil, and depending on how much oil you drained it will take 1 1/2 to 2 qts.

Thank you.  I just picked up some diesel to clean the tranny out this morning.  The type of transmission fluid was the next question.
