bottjernat1 2,190 #1 Posted July 13, 2020 (edited) So I wanted to share I got a bunch of push mowers and the one after i pressure washed it looks almost like brand new. Sometimes while working on peoples stuff i wonder why they even own anything with an engine on it! 2 of these push mowers when i first fired them up smoked like there was no tomorrow. Regular mosquito foggers. After i changed the oil and added a dab of lucas stabilizer and a new plug they run perfect. I used a 3/8 ratchet to undo the plug not 3 inch i was so busy that day i see i made a boo boo in my video. LOL I used rural king brand SAE 30 for oil. I guess the oil could have been worse could have had some magic fairy dust in it. LOL Please everyone share your stories of oil and or other issues resulting in bad maintenance!! ebinmaine 67,274 #3 Posted July 13, 2020 I can't remember which tractor it was but we got one in that had an ignition switch that was a generic 4 position with the post positions all screwed up and not flat blade. They were round stud. Somebody took the time to remove the ends of ALL the wires and attempt to rewire the tractor but never got the charging system working right. All for not wanting to actually hunt down the right switch which is less money than they put into it by a long shot... ABSOLUTELY BAFFLING TO ME.
bottjernat1 2,190 #4 Posted July 13, 2020 My late dad sold a john deere mt to a family member in upstate new york before i was adopted. And the tractor never got used till we came out to visit. So in my mid 20's my late dad decided to see if the family would rather have a garden tractor instead. To his surprise they said sure to an even trade. So dad traded them a 128 or 129 hydro cub cadet. with a snowblower a mower deck and other attachments. Needless to say it also didn't get used very much so dad bought it back to indiana just like we did the jd mt years later. When we got it home the cousin put a light switch for the ignition switch. It was an easy fix but he made it complicated. LOL
Stepney 2,325 #6 Posted July 14, 2020 I used to buy mowers off the repair yards so much when I was younger and had the time.. kind of a shame the dealers would tell people their old rigs were gonna cost too much to fix. Always loved watching the chaos unfold in old LawnBoys. It was a 2 stroke.. the only maintenance you had to worry about was the blade edge and the air cleaner.. nothing more needed tending to once they went CDI. But the 1.50$ air cleaner?? Nah. Lets ruin this commercial grade machine.. Granted. Normally they just gunked up so bad they couldnt pull any more air and choked out. Often nothing more was wrong. The mist of oil that always blew out of the carb kept the filter nice and absorbent, rarely letting the dust into the engine. By the time I would get them they would have been in the yard for months. I'd pop the coils into a toaster oven and bake them dry, coat of marine varnish, clean the bowl and a new filter.. flip them for a half decent profit. Very very few I ever had needed more than that. Old Snappers with the decks so packed full of caked grass the engines would 'seize'., 3 Speed toro mowers being used to move concrete.. Aint the same any more. I rarely take machines in now. The salt air ruins the modern cheap paints so fast and the decks turn to powder.

953 nut 55,075 #11 Posted July 14, 2020 Years back I was given a mower that the dealer said wouldn't be worth fixing because the entire ignition system was shot. Pulled the flywheel and found an insect nest built up around the ignition points. Cleaned that mess up and all was well. Offered to give it back to the previous owner but she had already bought a new one from the same dealer that wouldn't take the time to fix a simple problem. 2

Welcome to the throw away society. good for a few Gearheads to get some stuff to play with. Good things become exchange with cheap constructed Crap with built in diseases. One of my Neighbours next Valley have also a small Tractor, like my Beast but his is brand new. It is provided with a 20HP Engine but same size. He wonders each time when i drove with mine without any troubles to the Dump place or arround the Valley‘s He own that Machine now for a half year and decide to buy a other Brand because there is not a Week without Trouble. All troubles are provided by it‘s electric, mostly the steering stalls in unuseful situations. So he wonders why mine is just continouse Working, with that bit of Servicetime. i told him it‘s from 1976 just mechanically and this machines are only build to Work.
