chex313 123 #1 Posted July 10, 2020 (520H )I have installed a new electric hour meter in place of my Tach. I looked for a switched power off the switch mounted on the 420 CC HF motor ignition switch, but have only found constant hot. Do all ignition switch's have a switched power (12V) ?....Like this switch has an ON and you can pull start it off that. And a run for the starter which I am using hooked to the battery. I thought the switch would have a contact that turned power on that I could use for my gauge. I couldn't find the contact that is only powered when the switch is ON. What am I missing? I have a couple spots on the switch where 12V is always present. Only want the gauge to run when the switch is either on or the tractor is running. I tested the gauge and it does work...and am using my multi meter looking for the switched power. Thanks for any help.
chex313 123 #2 Posted July 10, 2020 (edited) Ok after further testing the ON on the switch just turns the ground to shut off the engine off. The engine keeps running on OFF if the switch isn't grounded. Is there a switched power at the starter? Or is just momentary on? I want to keep the original hour meter to show the age of the tractor and the new one for the age of the engine...and oil changes. Am trying not to use a separate switch to turn on the gauge every time I use it. Edited July 10, 2020 by chex313
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,176 #3 Posted July 10, 2020 You could use the original Onan battery ignition switch to control the magneto ignition on the replacement engine by adding a relay to the ignition circuit. That way you would still have control of the 12 volt accessories. Some models already use this system. How many wires are on the HF switch and how are they identified? Garry I'll take some better pics of it. I think 4 with one being white and going to the circuit breaker. A yellow for the oil cutoff...and at least two blacks. As for identification this might be the first time...I can't find anything on Google or Youtube where someone did this or recorded what they did with the ignition wires...Most of the info are from Go cart folks. Nothing is in the manual. Eventually I wanted to switch to the old ignition...but I may jury rig a switch so I can use the WH to mow and record the hours... chex313 123 #5 Posted July 10, 2020 (edited) I wanted to at least use a wire off the HF switch but after screwing around for 2 hours...I know every wire that won't work. I added a switch for now...Set an alarm for 4 hours to get the 3 break in and the 1 hour test mow. I'll use that switch for now , and marked another thread with info on the Onan wiring at a later time. I can wire a 4 way switch in my house but get confused by DC Onan wiring... ❚❚ New to the wheel horse family! - Wheel Horse Electrical - RedSquare Wheel Horse Forum Edited July 10, 2020 by chex313
