314-8

Well, my addiction has started. I now have my second Wheel horse. I picked up a 314-8 with a rear discharge . Seems to run ok, throttle seems a little touchy if you move it too fast but it looks like they installed a replacement  carb at some point and I'm assuming it needs to be adjusted. The issue it has that I need to address first is electrical and I need some starting points.  He was using a screw driver across the solenoid to start it. You turn on the key switch, jump it out and she starts right up. Now if you get off of the seat it shuts off as if the PTO was left engaged but it is not. Is this an issue with the switch for the PTO?

Thanks in advance!

Kindest regards

Certainly sounds like a pto switch. If it shuts off when you get off the seat and doesn't start because it thinks the PTO is engaged, I'm thinking you're getting really close.

All our tractors here are older and have no safeties but I know the newer ones used a seat switch.

Have a model number and serial number? We should have a good set of wiring diagrams.

Sounds like the Seat safety switch. Look under the seat and see if it has one.

The model is a 314-8.  I dont think the seat switch is the issue only because its working as its suppose to. If I get off of the seat once I have it running it shuts down. Ill dig into the PTO switch and report back. Unfortunately its seems to be buried behind the panel.

Sounds like the PTO switch to me as well.  My 312H only shuts down when I get off when the pto is engaged.  Otherwise I can get off the tractor and the engine will keep running.  Maybe the switch is stuck?

another area to consider if tractor shuts down when you dismount with mower deck disengaged

check the PTO lever for excess play

excess PTO lever play could indicate the lever is not contacting the PTO safety switches properly

most times this can easily be tested - push PTO lever toward the  pivot area (tower) and then see if the tractor will continue to run

Ok, luckily a super simple fix. Terminal had fallen off the PTO switch. Not the easiest place to try to fit big hands into but I was able to get it back on without having to take anything apart.  Thank you for all of your help and Ill post pics of my two wheel horses below this post..

Kindest regards

  Ed
