peter lena 8,721 #2 Posted July 7, 2020 hello GOOFBALL 65, MY FIRST QUESTION IS do you have some road area to drive on , so you can heat up that fluid and possibly get the flushing effect from hot oil ? not having an automatic , but having totally flushed similar gear box noises with road miles and using every gear , makes me think you could have varnish build up and debris issue. was the oil you drained out hot? i found that hot oil flushes are best and the effect is a gradual gain on the issue. good luck , pete
bottjernat1 2,190 #3 Posted July 7, 2020 I have found out on some of this old stuff if you take a piece of emery cloth and clean up the dip stick you may be able to read it better. i have did this to a a few. 1
pfrederi 17,866 #4 Posted July 7, 2020 lay the wet dipstick on a clean paper towel. The Dex/Merc pink will show up on the towel. 5 qts is usually enough assuming you didn't open and completely empty the system. 2

Make sure it is the case half gasket leaking. Frequently the motion O rings fail. Fluid runs down the front of the case and drips off the bottom making it look like a case half leak.
Goofball65 13 #7 Posted July 10, 2020 Hadn't thought of that, have to check and see, does look like its coming from front end of unit. This thing just pissed out a gallon of fluid over half of my yard . Is that a easy fix? or do I still have to tear it all apart?
gt14rider 797 #8 Posted July 10, 2020 Can you see leak? Is it from hoses, motion control, case, oil filter, lift cylinder or control, is filter correct. Pics
pfrederi 17,866 #9 Posted July 10, 2020 Motion control leak is cheap but not easy to fix. Need to be very sure where your leak is coming from.
Goofball65 13 #10 Posted July 10, 2020 (edited) well I guess i have to start taking the old girl apart , didn't wanna have to do it (it's my only mower and 4+ aceres that wont stop growing) wish me luck. Can I buy a manuel on this tractor any I mean an actual book ? Oh and not yet on seeing where it's coming from still have deck on and can't anything yet. as far as pics well i'm working on that. pfrederi 17,866 #11 Posted July 10, 2020 Leaks are not fatal...IF you keep adding fluid. Things here are drying out mowing not so important right now. There is no service manual. Drop the mower and take off the plate around the motion control lever and lift lever. Should give you enough vision to start finding the leak.
Goofball65 13 #12 Posted July 14, 2020 ok found the leak. and before i start again Sorry no pics ,lol it's coming from the seam between the pump housing and the rear end case up about halfway.not gasket, mabey inter seal ???? don't know never had one of these apart before, leak is almost imedit, dose not need to be hot. Goofball65 13 #14 Posted July 16, 2020 thanks! so if i break this open will i open a can of worms so to speak or easy fix?
pfrederi 17,866 #15 Posted July 16, 2020 Read the service manual here. Not a bad job but will take some time. Give you a chance to check the screen filter on the suction line....
