Uneven Fly Wheel Armature Air Gap

Recommended Posts

JoeM

While working on a xi Kohler 22HP Ignition update I ran into something I have not seen before. I set the armature coils air gap to ten thousands, then as I rotate the fly wheel and the gap decreases to almost nothing when the second flywheel magnet passed under the second armature leg of the coil. I readjusted the gap and the same thing happened. It was also the same on the second coil. Checking and readjusting provided not much results, still the same issue. I ended up using 15 thousands to get enough clearance, 6 thousands,  between the flywheel magnet and second leg of the armature.

I checked the height of the flywheel magnets and found 9 thousands difference. The update requires the use a new flywheel with a different key location for spark advance. The kit is Kohler and the new flywheel in the kit is Kohler.

Do you think it will run okay?

I was going to swap the old magnet with the new one but the screws are some kind of special keyed configuration. You can see that in the second pic, if any one knows what that is called let me know.

I am going to write the place of purchase and see if they will send another flywheel.

I was thinking that too. Although.....to readjust and set, the engine will have to be removed.

I'm probably going to get her back in and give it a try in a couple days.

If you can get the flywheel turned on a lathe, that may be the best answer.  If you could get the screws out and then shim up the low side, that too should work.  Here is one source of security screwdrivers.

Looks like a tri-wing bit. Never gave McMaster a thought for these. :handgestures-thumbup:

I am going to try it but being new it should be right. It is pretty bad to see it off that much. I checked the run out on the flywheel itself and it is <.002. I figure the defect is in the insert. Might try to measure the old one and compare to the new today.

Tried to get a measurement to cant find a good spot without removal.

Kohler CH22, tried the new up dated ignition with the uneven trigger magnets. Air gap set to .015 putting one leg of the armature at .015 and the other at .006, seems to run fine.
