314-8 will not run on its own

Hello,

I have a 1993 314-8. It has 700 hours on it. It would crank but would not start so I replaced the carburetor and the fuel pump with non oem parts but the engine will not run on its own. If a squirt gas into the carburetor while cranking it, it will run on its own. Once I stop squirting gas into the carburetor, its stops altogether. I noticed that the original fuel pump is a dual diaphragm unit and the non oem one is a single diaphragm. Any ideas on what you could be wrong?

Can you pull the fuel line from the carburetor and see if there is a good amount of fuel flowing when the engine is cranked?  If that checks out, the issue is in the carburetor.  Be careful doing this test, maybe you could add a length of hose and direct it into a can.

With non Oem parts? Do you still have the original carb and fuel pump?  If you do, stick with that.  I have used fuel pumps from eBay, although plastic, they work well. I have never had any carb issues that I couldn’t fix myself.

Clean entire fuel system. Including the new carb. New lines and filter. Clean tank and any filter screen at the fuel valve. 

 

Is the vent vent in the cap plugged? Try running without cap on.

I had a brand new Stens pump that would not supply enough fuel to run.  My dealer where I bought pump didn’t believe me.  I robbed an old pump from a tractor that was 20 years older and running good.  I loaded the tractor up running with used pump from other tractor.  Went to dealer and had them come out in parking lot.  Let them hear it run with used pump.  Switched to Stens pump, wouldn’t run at all.  Then they believed me.  He went and grabbed another pump (Stens) and that one would not run either.  So, he cut me a deal on a more expensive Kohler pump.  Installed it in parking lot and it did not turn over 3 times and it was running.  Long story short is that there are some bad ones out there.

Sorry to hear of these problems. If you are using gas with ethanol, please STOP, that junk will ruin the fuel system. Look at this site for information on locations near you that sell ethanol free gas. https://www.buyrealgas.com/

The contaminants left in tour fuel tank and fuel line probably caused problems in the new components. The aftermarket carburetors being sold today seem to be more prone to problems than the ones your engine left the factory with. I would drain the fuel tank, replace the fuel line (1/4" rubber fuel hose) add a fuel filter, rebuild the carb. and put the factory fuel pump back on. Use non-ethanol gas and add some Sea Foam to the fuel.
