71_Bronco 1,072 #1 Posted July 1, 2020 Was thinking the other day about building a flat-bed style trailer, without a dump, and make the deck as low as possible. Basically I'd have the tires outside the deck rather than under it. I cant really find anything like this on the market. I did come across this picture from "wheel horse stables" website. Pretty much what I was looking to build, but a flat-bed vs the tub. Has anybody built something like this. Or know who currently makes one?
c-series don 9,075 #2 Posted July 1, 2020 I do remember seeing that style cart in a Wheel Horse brochure, maybe mid eighties?
ebinmaine 68,906 #3 Posted July 1, 2020 I've seen a few here and there over the years that had that general size and shape but I always thought they were homemade. I have a 17 cube foot trailer that I was thinking of making into a dump style like my orange one but much lower to the ground with the wheels on the outside like the above picture. I like the idea of having the weight of the load closer to the ground when going over rough ground. Huge difference in stability. I really hadn't processed the thought of how to go about doing it other than that the frame would be a T shape. Wheels at the top of the T so to speak. Trailer ball connector would be at the bottom of the long end. Dump mechanism attached to the front of the box.
RandyLittrell 3,885 #4 Posted July 3, 2020 The axle on those runs right under the floor, so you could just make a square of rectangle out of angle iron or square tubing and run some 3/4" cold rolled under it for your wheels. You could build the deck from steel or plywood if you kept it inside. The original trailers like posted were most likely made by Ohio Steel. They made them for WH and Cub Cadet that I know of and most likely for others. Here is a pic of mine. 1

71_Bronco 1,072 #6 Posted July 3, 2020 (edited) I think I'm going to build a flat-bed style. Going to do a steel square tube frame and a solid rod for the axle. I'll make the deck out of steel (maybe diamond plate) and add angle iron on 3 sides for a little raised lip. I want the overall width to be 36" to keep it as wide as my Commando 8. Going to skip the dump-feature as it will be low to the ground. Plus I could just disconnect it from the tractor and lift the tongue to dump it if needed. ebinmaine 68,906 #7 Posted July 3, 2020 Sounds good. If you keep the tongue long it would give you better leverage for lifting heavy loads.
tarcoleo 119 #8 Posted July 3, 2020 Simple solution to light load hauling and dumping problem,. Works for me when large wagon not needed.
Turftech 82 #9 Posted July 6, 2020 This is the transport trailer (retired) from a Woodbay Greens Iron greens roller I rebuilt. https://www.woodbayturftech.com No relation to me! Used ones are out there with a little research under used golf course equipment. It's great, just drop the gate for rolling/dragging large items into. As you can see primary duties involve supporting property maintenance.
